  • Landfills are excavated or engineered sites where non-liquid hazardous waste is deposited for final disposal and covered. These units are selected and designed to minimize the chance of release of hazardous waste into the environment. Design standards for hazardous waste landfills require a double liner; double leachate collection and removal systems (LCRS); leak detection system; run on, runoff, and wind dispersal controls; construction quality assurance (CQA) program. Liquid wastes may not be placed in a hazardous waste landfill.

  • As a conventional treatment process, centrifugal dewatering of sludge required an additional energy of 1,376 kWh per day for recycling, pumping, mixing as well as transporting sludge. The conclusion was that anaerobic digestion can reduce the green-house gases versus conventional dewatering. The results from this research can thus demonstrate the applicability of anaerobic digestion on conversion of waste to energy, looking forward to resource recovery.

  • The potentials of using the hydraulic technique in combined unit for municipal wastewater treatment were studied. A combined unit in which processes of coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation, has been designed utilizing hydraulic mixing instead of mechanical mixing. A jar test treatability study has been conducted to locate the optimum dose of the coagulants to be used. Alum, ferrous sulfate, ferric sulfate, a mixture of ferric and ferrous sulfates, and mixture of lime and ferrous sulfate were all tested.

  • The use of industrial waste water for irrigation through drip system has emerged a very important way to utilize its nutrients and removal of its pollutants load by cultivating various crops (tomato, brinjal). An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of textile factory effluents (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100% concentration) on germination and some physiological parameters like biomass production, root development in vegetable crop. Plants were raised in small pots in triplicate and irrigated with various concentrations (0, 10, 35, 75 and 100%) of effluent.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate the effect of organic loading rate to the performance of anaerobic co-digestion digester treating organic fraction of food waste (FW) and sludge waste (SW) from wastewater treatment plant. The experiment was conducted in two runs: Run S50, substrate contained 50 % of FW and 50 % of SW in term of volatile solid (VS) concentration; Run S100 (control run) contained 100 % SW in the influent substrate.

  • The field evaluation of composts prepared out of enzyme industrial wastes and municipal solid waste was carried out in farmer’s field in Bangalore, India using maize as a test crop in a randomized complete block design with nine treatments and 3 replications. Two composts: MEES compost and PS compost and fertilizers were used to know the effects on soil properties and agronomic characteristics and nutrient uptake by maize plants. Application of MEES compost and PS compost resulted in increased soil pH and organic carbon content, but the increase was insignificant.

  • Clinical Laboratory produces large quantities of liquid infectious waste in the form of body fluids including blood. Biomedical waste management generally covers the solid waste generated in the Health care set up. Liquid infected waste management in a hospital is mainly addressed in the form of Sewage treatment plant (STP) or Effluent treatment plant (ETP) which is made mandatory for hospitals. Construction of these facilities involves lot of financial expenditure. Small facilities may not be able to afford to construct a STP or ETP in their facility.

  • The study of wetland plants has been of interest to botanists for many years, but the need to identify and understand these plants has expanded dramatically since the 1970s. At that time, ecologists began to make known the vital role that wetlands play in our landscapes. The image of wetlands has shifted from that of mosquito-ridden wastelands to natural areas of critical importance. Because the field of wetland ecology has expanded, so has the study of the plants that thrive there, and their role in ecosystem dynamics.

  • Economic development, population growth, and environmental pollution evolving in many parts of the world are placing great demands on existing resources of fresh water and reflecting a "water crisis". Resource management, efficient utilization of the water resources, and above all water purification are all alternatives to resolve the water crisis. Purification approaches include traditional approaches that have lasted for several centuries without major modifications as well as new innovative approaches....

  • The presence of chlorine in alternative fuels (e.g., sewage sludge, municipal solid waste or incineration ash, chlorinated biomass,) has both direct and indirect implications on cement kiln emissions and performance. Methods have been developed to properly manage chlorine and its potential implications – but it is important that these implications be recognized and managed. Trace levels of chlorine in feed materials can lead to the formation of acidic gases such as hydrogen chloride (HCl) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) (WBCSD 2002).

  • This section illustrates that MBT systems can be described as two simple concepts: either to separate the waste and then treat; or to treat the waste and then separate. In some systems only biological treatment is required to treat all the residual MSW before disposal to landfill. Whilst a variety of treatment and mechanical separation options are offered, these need to be optimised in terms of the outputs in order to find outlets for the various materials / fuels derived from the process (see Markets for the Outputs section). ...
