For some, it's about exploring the unknown, taking risks, and pushing oneself to the limits. For others, it's simply about trying something new and challenging oneself in a safe and controlled environment. Whatever your definition of adventure, there's no denying the thrill that comes with stepping outside your comfort zone. Some people enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking, camping, and mountain climbing. These activities require physical fitness, mental toughness, and the ability to navigate difficult terrain. Others prefer more adrenaline-fueled activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, and white-water rafting. These activities may seem dangerous, but with proper training and equipment, they can be a thrilling and safe way to experience the rush of adventure. The invention of the telephone revolutionized the way we communicate with each other. Before the telephone, people had to rely on letters, telegrams, or face-to-face conversations to communicate with each other. This often meant waiting days or even weeks to hear back from someone, which could be frustrating and inefficient. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. Bell was a teacher of the deaf, and he became interested in the idea of transmitting sound after his mother started to lose her hearing. He began experimenting with ways to send sound over a wire, and eventually developed a device that could transmit the sound of a voice. The first telephone was a simple device with two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. When someone spoke into the transmitter, their voice would be transformed into an electrical signal and sent over the wire to the receiver, where it would be transformed back into sound. The quality of the sound was not very good at first, but over time, improvements were made to the technology, leading to clearer and more reliable communication. Today, the telephone has evolved into a sophisticated device that can not only make calls, but also send text messages, take photos, and connect to the internet. It's hard to imagine life without the telephone and the convenience it provides. 1. What did people use to rely on for communication before the invention of the telephone? A. 20. Camera Vision 36-year-old Canadian film-maker Rob Spence doesn't seem unusual. You wouldn't realise it at first, but one of his eyes is false. But this is not the most unusual thing about him. Inside this false eye Spence has a wireless video camera. This camera is not connected to his brain and has not improved his eyesight. It records everything he sees. The camera runs on a very small battery and it has a transmitter, a device which allows Spence to send an image of what he is seeing at any moment to a computer. Spence damaged his right eye at the age of thirteen while he was playing with his grandfather's gun on a visit to Ireland. After the accident his vision got worse until he became completely blind in that eye. Three years ago, he had an operation to remove this eye and to insert a false one. And it is the false eye that now contains his miniature video camera. Spence knew that building a camera that was small enough to fit inside the eye would not be easy, so he contacted Dr Steve Mann, a cyborgs scientist at the University of Toronto. Cyborgs are machines that combine natural and artificial systems. Together Spence and Mann succeeded in building a device which Time magazine described as one of the best inventions of the year. even though his project is still quite new, Spence says that many people have ready told him that they don't like being filmed. He finds this strange as the same people have no problems with the hundreds of surveillance cameras that film them every day at school, in the underground and in shopping centres. He hopes that his project will make people think more about how governments and organisations monitor these cameras and the information they record. 1. What is the most unusual thing about Rob Spence? A. He is a Canadian film-maker B. He has a wireless video camera inside his false eye C. He damaged his eye while playing with his grandfather's gun D. He contacted a cyborgs scientist to build his video camera 2. What does the wireless video camera in Spence's eye do? A. The camera is connected to his brain B. The camera is connected to the computer with a cable C. The camera has a transmitter D. The camera records the image on a memory card 4. Who did Spence contact to help him build his wireless video camera? A. His grandfather B. A cyborgs scientist C. A surgeon D. A camera manufacturer 5. Why does Spence hope that his project will make people think more about surveillance cameras? A. He wants people to like being filmed B. He wants people to be more aware of government and organizational monitoring C. He wants people to stop using surveillance cameras D.
