We describe an efficient bottom-up parser that interleaves syntactic and semantic structure building. Two techniques are presented for reducing search by reducing local ambiguity: Limited leftcontext constraints are used to reduce local syntactic ambiguity, and deferred sortal-constraint application is used to reduce local semantic ambiguity. We experimentally evaluate these techniques, and show dramatic reductions in both number of chart edges and total parsing time.
With the availability of large treebanks, retrieval techniques for highly structured data now become essential. In this contribution, we investigate the efficient retrieval of MT structures at the cost of a complex index--the Treegram Index. We illustrate our approach with the VENONA retrieval system, which handles the BH t (Biblia Hebraica transeripta) treebank comprising 508,650 phrase structure trees with maximum degree eight and maximum height 17, containing altogether 3.3 million Old-Hebrew words.
This paper proposes a new approach for ranking efficiency units in data envelopment analysis as a modification of the super-efficiency models developed by Tone. The new approach based on slacks-based measure of efficiency (SBM) for dealing with objective function used to classify all of the decision-making units allows the ranking of all inefficient DMUs and overcomes the disadvantages of infeasibility.
Large expenses associated with rice production and dependence on energy related inputs like fuel and fertilizer in particular compel rice producers to use management practices that are input efficient and result in least cost. This study uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to calculate technical efficiency (TE), allocative efficiency (AE), and economic efficiency (EE) for rice production in Arkansas at the field level using data from 137 fields enrolled in the University of Arkansas, Rice Research Verification Program (RRVP) from 2005 to 2011.

The "glue" approach to semantic composition in Lexical-Functional Grammar uses linear logic to assemble meanings from syntactic analyses (Dalrymple et al., 1993). It has been compurationally feasible in practice (Dalrymple et al., 1997b). Yet deduction in linear logic is known to be intractable. Even the propositional tensor fragment is NP complete(Kanovich, 1992). This paper describes an efficient parallel system for processing Typed Feature Structures (TFSs) on shared-memory parallel machines. We call the system Parallel Substrate for TFS (PSTFS}. PSTFS is designed for parallel computing environments where a large number of agents are working and communicating with each other. Such agents use PSTFS as their low-level module for solving constraints on TFSs and sending/receiving TFSs to/from other agents in an efficient manner.
This paper describes a new efficient speech act type tagging system. This system covers the tasks of (1) segmenting a turn into the optimal number of speech act units (SA units), and (2) assigning a speech act type tag (SA tag) to each SA unit. Our method is based on a theoretically clear statistical model that integrates linguistic, acoustic and situational information. We report tagging experiments on Japanese and English dialogue corpora manually labeled with SA tags.
This paper examines efficient predictive broadcoverage parsing without dynamic programming. In contrast to bottom-up methods, depth-first top-down parsing produces partial parses that are fully connected trees spanning the entire left context, from which any kind of non-local dependency or partial semantic interpretation can in principle be read. We contrast two predictive parsing approaches, topdown and left-corner parsing, and find both to be viable.
This paper describes new and improved techniques which help a unification-based parser to process input efficiently and robustly. In combination these methods result in a speed-up in parsing time of more than an order of magnitude. The methods are correct in the sense that none of them rule out legal rule applications. and Sch~ifer, 1994; Krieger and Sch~ifer, 1995) and an advanced agenda-based bottom-up chart parser (Kiefer and Scherf, 1996).
We present an efficient procedure for cost-based abduction, which is based on the idea of using chart parsers as proof procedures. We discuss in detail three features of our algorithm - - goal-driven bottom-up derivation, tabulation of the partial results, and agenda control mechanism - - and report the results of the preliminary experiments, which show how these features improve the computational efficiency of cost-based abduction.
