  • This thesis has been done in an effort to investigate how euphemism is translated from English into Vietnamese in translated works as well as to find out what are the main approaches taken by translators in translating euphemism from English into Vietnamese. A collection of samples taken from literary works written in English and their Vietnamese versions have been analyzed to explore ways in which euphemisms are transferred. Besides, quantitative analyses have also been carried out to show distribution of ways of translating, on the basis of which to identify preferences....

  • Forensic Engineering Investigation is a compendium of the investigative methodologies used by engineers and scientific investigators to evaluate some of the more common types of failures and catastrophic events. In essence, the book provides analyses and methods for determining how an entity was damaged and when that damage may have legal consequences. The material covers 21 common types of failures, catastrophic events, and losses that forensic engineers routinely assess.

  • An Empirical Investigation of International Consumer Market Segmentation Decisions They may also be more effective at exerting “voice” to manage agent behavior, even without the exit option that school choice policies provide (Hirschman, 1970). Finally, student composition may operate as an employment amenity for teachers and administrators, reducing the salaries that the school must pay and increasing the quality of teachers that can be hired for any fixed salary (Antos and Rosen, 1975).

  • INEQUALITY AND PUBLIC POLICY: THEORETICAL INVESTIGATIONS Caution is required, however, in generalizing from this chapter’s results to choice markets that do not link school assignment to residential location. Under Tiebout choice, parents may have to give up desired neighborhood amenities—views, parks, air quality, or characteristics of neighbors—to obtain a more effective school.

  • We investigate the empirical behavior of ngram discounts within and across domains. When a language model is trained and evaluated on two corpora from exactly the same domain, discounts are roughly constant, matching the assumptions of modified Kneser-Ney LMs. However, when training and test corpora diverge, the empirical discount grows essentially as a linear function of the n-gram count. We adapt a Kneser-Ney language model to incorporate such growing discounts, resulting in perplexity improvements over modified Kneser-Ney and Jelinek-Mercer baselines. ...

  • We describe a corpus-based investigation of proposals in dialogue. First, we describe our DR/compliant coding scheme and report our inter-coder reliability results. Next, we test several hypotheses about what constitutes a well-formed proposal. 1 Introduction we report our findings .on tracking agreement. 2 Tracking Agreement Our corpus consists of 24 computer-mediated dialogues 1 in which two participants collaborate on a simple task of buying furniture for the living and dining rooms of a house (a variant of the task in (Walker, 1993)). ...

  • In this paper we propose a methodology for investigating the relationship between architectures of natural language generation (NLG) systems and stylistic properties of texts. Biber's (1988) methodology is used to obtain both the characterisation of style of our corpus and the division of the corpus into sets of linguistically similar texts. These sets will be used for studying the architectural aspects.

  • This book on investigative electrocardiography is addressed to investigators who are using electrocardiology as a research tool in epidemiological or clinical research or in investigations on possible adverse responses of new pharmacological agents. The primary emphasis of the book is on prognostic implications of ECG abnormalities in the conditions covered, including the prevalence and incidence of ECG abnormalities in contrasting populations. We excluded from our book cardiac disorders with a relatively low population prevalence that otherwise may be of great clinical interest.

  • Taking this route sets up a dual goal: (a) from the generic paraphrasing perspective - an objective evaluation of paraphrase acquisition performance on a concrete application dataset, as well as identifying the additional mechanisms needed to match paraphrases in texts; (b) from the RE perspective investigating the feasibility and performance of a generic paraphrase-based approach for RE. Our configuration assumes a set of entailing templates (non-symmetric “paraphrases”) for the target relation.

  • Acquisition of prosody, in addition to vocabulary and grammar, is essential for language learners. However, it has received less attention in instruction. To enable automatic identification and feedback on learners’ prosodic errors, we investigate automatic pitch accent labeling for nonnative speech. We demonstrate that an acoustic-based context model can achieve accuracies over 79% on binary pitch accent recognition when trained on withingroup data.

  • We investigate independent and relevant event-based extractive mutli-document summarization approaches. In this paper, events are defined as event terms and associated event elements. With independent approach, we identify important contents by frequency of events. With relevant approach, we identify important contents by PageRank algorithm on the event map constructed from documents. Experimental results are encouraging.

  • This paper investigates two elements of Maximum Entropy tagging: the use of a correction feature in the Generalised Iterative Scaling (Gis) estimation algorithm, and techniques for model smoothing. We show analytically and empirically that the correction feature, assumed to be required for the correctness of GIS, is unnecessary. We also explore the use of a Gaussian prior and a simple cutoff for smoothing. The experiments are performed with two tagsets: the standard Penn Treebank POS tagset and the larger set of lexical types from Combinatory Categorial Grammar. ...

  • I present the investigation involving two extensions of the cellular automaton based NagelSchreckenberg model, the Velocity-Dependent-Randomisation (VDR) model, and the two-lane model for symmetric and asymmetric lane changing rule sets. The study of the VDR model outlines a potential method in extending the lifetime of a metastable state and consequently postponing an inevitable traffic jam by orders of magnitude. The two lane model produces a so called "critical" and "sub-critical" flow which combined cause the collapse of flow at a critical density.
