Linear combiner

We present minimum Bayesrisk system combination, a method that integrates consensus decoding and system combination into a unified multisystem minimum Bayesrisk (MBR) technique. Unlike other MBR methods that rerank translations of a single SMT system, MBR system combination uses the MBR decision rule and a linear combination of the component systems’ probability distributions to search for the minimum risk translation among all the finitelength strings over the output vocabulary.

We propose a cascaded linear model for joint Chinese word segmentation and partofspeech tagging. With a characterbased perceptron as the core, combined with realvalued features such as language models, the cascaded model is able to efficiently utilize knowledge sources that are inconvenient to incorporate into the perceptron directly. Experiments show that the cascaded model achieves improved accuracies on both segmentation only and joint segmentation and partofspeech tagging. On the Penn Chinese Treebank 5.0, we obtain an error reduction of 18.

Recent work has seen the emergence of a common framework for parsing categorial grammar (CG) formalisms that fall within the 'typelogical' tradition (such as the Lambek calculus and related systems), whereby some method of linear logic theorem proving is used in combination with a system of labelling that ensures only deductions appropriate to the relevant grammatical logic are allowed. The approaches realising this framework, however, have not so far addressed the task of incremental parsing a key issue in earlier work with 'flexible' categorial grammars.

This paper proposes a novel method that exploits multiple resources to improve statistical machine translation (SMT) based paraphrasing. In detail, a phrasal paraphrase table and a feature function are derived from each resource, which are then combined in a loglinear SMT model for sentencelevel paraphrase generation. Experimental results show that the SMTbased paraphrasing model can be enhanced using multiple resources. The phraselevel and sentencelevel precision of the generated paraphrases are above 60% and 55%, respectively.

Recently, confusion network decoding has been applied in machine translation system combination. Due to errors in the hypothesis alignment, decoding may result in ungrammatical combination outputs. This paper describes an improved confusion network based method to combine outputs from multiple MT systems. In this approach, arbitrary features may be added loglinearly into the objective function, thus allowing language model expansion and rescoring. Also, a novel method to automatically select the hypothesis which other hypotheses are aligned against is proposed. ...

This study uses what Cresswell (2003) refers to as a ‘mixed methods approach’, one that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and a ‘sequential explanatory strategy’ in which the collection and analysis of the quantitative data is followed by the collection and analysis of the qualitative data (p 215).

This book is based onmy notes fromlectures to students of electrical, elec tronic, and computer engineering at South Bank University. It presents a first year degree/diploma course in engineering mathematics with an emphasis on important concepts, such as algebraic structure, symme tries, linearity, and inverse problems, clearly presented in an accessible style. It encompasses the requirements, not only of students with a good maths grounding, but also of those who, with enthusiasm and motiva tion, can make up the necessary knowledge.

We wish to construct a system which possesses socalled associative memory. This is definable generally as a process by which an input, considered as a “key”, to a memory system is able to evoke, in a highly selective fashion, a specific response associated with that key, at the system output. The signalresponse association should be “robust”, that is, a “noisy” or “incomplete” input signal should none the less invoke the correct response—or at least an acceptable response. Such a system is also called a content addressable memory....

The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closedform tractability over realworld accuracy.

ICA by Nonlinear Decorrelation and Nonlinear PCA This chapter starts by reviewing some of the early research efforts in independent component analysis (ICA), especially the technique based on nonlinear decorrelation, that was successfully used by Jutten, H´ rault, and Ans to solve the first ICA problems. e Today, this work is mainly of historical interest, because there exist several more efficient algorithms for ICA. Nonlinear decorrelation can be seen as an extension of secondorder methods such as whitening and principal component analysis (PCA).

The second of these new initiatives launched in September of 2008 is a similar partnership between an organization called World of Good, Inc. and online auction giant eBay. This collaboration is known as World of Good by eBay and their tagline is “Where your Shopping Shapes the World.” The partnership was formed with the idea that there is a growing consumer need for trusted information, and for transparency into how and where products are made. Both World of Good and Worldstock.

LINEAR PROCESSING TECHNIQUES Most discrete image processing computational algorithms are linear in nature; an output image array is produced by a weighted linear combination of elements of an input array. The popularity of linear operations stems from the relative simplicity of spatial linear processing as opposed to spatial nonlinear processing. However, for image processing operations, conventional linear processing is often computationally infeasible without efficient computational algorithms because of the large image arrays....

We discuss the proof of and systematic application of Case’s sum rules for Jacobi matrices. Of special interest is a linear combination of two of his sum rules which has strictly positive terms. Among our results are a complete classification of the spectral measures of all Jacobi matrices J for which J − J0 is HilbertSchmidt, and a proof of Nevai’s conjecture that the Szeg˝ condition o holds if J − J0 is trace class.

Using the gradient method, element concentrations within the lichen are usually observed to increase as the distance to the suspected source decreases. Gough and Erdman (1977) used linear regression to evaluate the relationship between distance from a coal fired power plant and metal levels in Xanthoparmelia chlorochroa. However, as Puckett (1988) points out, concentrations of many elements will not reach zero at large distances from pollution sources because they have essential nutritional roles or are normal components of the lichen when growing in its natural environment.

The physical form of popular film has changed over the last 75 years and seems likely to continue to do so. Here we have documented four linear changes. We believe that all of them have been created by filmmakers seeking to control the attention of their viewers, and possibly to enhance viewer involvement in film.

The book is intended to provide an introduction to the effects of nonlinear elements in feedback control systems. A central topic is the use of the Describing Function (DF) method since in combination with simulation it provides an excellent approach for the practicing engineer and follows on logically from a first course in classical control, such as the companion volume in this series. Some of the basic material on the topic can be found in my earlier book which is frequently referenced throughout the text....
