  • Characterizing the nature of heavy metal release reactions, sorption mechanisms, and movement in the soil is the main topic of this book. Because soils are heterogeneous, heavy metals in soils can be involved in a series of complex chemical and biological interactions including oxidation-reduction, precipitation and dissolution, volatilization, and surface and solution phase complexation. The heterogeneous nature of the different soil constituents adds to the complexity of interactions of heavy metal species with the soil environment....

  • Permanganate may be applied to sites as either potassium permanganate (KMnO4) or sodium permanganate (NaMnO4). Where cost dominates over engineering factors at a site, potassium permanganate is the preferred chemical form because it is more widely available, less costly, and is available in solid form, which facilitates transport and handling. Where other factors are more important, the liquid form of sodium permangante is preferable.

  • Catalytic oxidation of organic compounds is an extremely important field of chemistry, spanning the range from biological oxidations to large scale industrial production of commodity chemicals. However, many of these transformations can hardly be classified as organometallic reactions, since the catalysts (often simple metal salts) and the intermediates can be rather regarded as coordination complexes than organometallic compounds.

  • In order to meet the increasing demand for valve-regulated lead–acid ŽVRLA. batteries, a new soft lead has been produced by Pasminco Metals. In this material, bismuth is increased to a level that produces a significant improvement in battery cycle life. By contrast, other common impurities, such as arsenic, cobalt, chromium, nickel, antimony and tellurium, that are known to be harmful to VRLA batteries are controlled to very low levels. A bismuth ŽBi.-bearing oxide has been manufactured ŽBarton-pot method. ...

  • According to American Society for Testing and Materials' corrosion glossary, corrosion is defined as "the chemical or electrochemical reaction between a material, usually a metal, and its environment that produces a deterioration of the material and its properties".1 Other definitions include Fontana's description that corrosion is the extractive metallurgy in reverse,2 which is expected since metals thermodynamically are less stable in their elemental forms than in their compound forms as ores.

  • Almost 4000 years ago Egyptians and Babylonians used aluminum compounds in various chemicals and medicines. Herodotus mentioned alum in the fifth century b.c. and Pliny referred to “alumen,” now known as alum, as a mordant to fix dyes to textiles around 80 a.d. In 1754 Marggraf showed that a distinct compound existed in both alum and clays. In 1761 the French chemist Guyton de Morveau proposed the name “alumine” for the base in alum, identified in 1787 by Antoine Lavosier as the oxide of a then-undiscovered element.

  • It is widely accepted that oxidative modification of lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) plays a pivotal role in the initiation and development of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we found that the MeOH and H2O extracts of the plant Ampelopsis cantoniensis, and its main constituent, myricetin, possessed significant protective effects on LDL oxidation induced by either a metal ion (Cu2+) or a free radical (AAPH).

  • Metallothionein-3, also called neuronal growth-inhibitory factor, is one of the four members of the mammalian metallothionein family, which in turn belongs to the metallothionein, a class of ubiquitously occurring low-molecular-weight cysteine- and metal-rich proteins containing metal– thiolate clusters.

  • Prefractionation procedures facilitate the identification of lower-abundance proteins in proteome analysis. Here we have optimized the conditions for immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) to enrich for phos-phoproteins. The metal ions, Ga(III), Fe(III), Zn(II), and Al(III), were compared for their abilities to trap phosphoproteins; Ga(III) was the best.

  • H2 -forming methylenetetrahydromethanopterin dehydro-genase (Hmd) is an unusual hydrogenase present in many methanogenic archaea. The homodimeric enzyme dubbed metal-free hydrogenase does not contain iron–sulfur clus-ters or nickel and thus differs from [Ni-Fe] and [Fe-Fe] hydrogenases, which are all iron–sulfur proteins. Hmd preparations were found to contain up to 1 mol iron per 40 kDa subunit, but the iron was considered to be a con-taminant as none of the catalytic and spectroscopic pro-perties of the enzyme indicated that it was an essential component....

  • Selective fractionation was applied to partition of heavy metals in river sediment of the rivers Nhue and Tolich Hanoi’s outskirts. The observed results showed a considerable difference of the proportion of various fractions of studied heavy metals. The residual fraction of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Ni stayed the highest portions. The portions/percentages of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd as carbonate fractions were comparatively higher than those as Fe-Mn oxide fractions and organic fractions.

  • Since their first introduction, metallic biomaterials have always been designed to be corrosion resistant. For decades, this paradigm has become the mainframe of the biomaterials world. It has been cited in thousands of scientific papers and taught in hundreds of courses of materials for biomedical devices. It has also been followed by industries in developing millions of medical devices until today. Nowadays, with the advent of tissue engineering, biomaterials are envisaged to actively interact with the body.
