  • A survey conducted several years ago within the local atmospheric science community had indicated the need for a comprehensive reference book of atmospheric chemistry and physics. The present compilation of data has been prepared in an attempt to fi ll this need. While the subject, as a whole or in parts, has received an adequate treatment in textbooks, encyclopedias, and in other overviews, these publications do not generally present numerical data but discuss important observations by way of illustrations.

  • The goal of this work is to give a precise numerical description of the K¨hler cone of a compact K¨hler manifold. Our main result states that the a a K¨hler cone depends only on the intersection form of the cohomology ring, the a Hodge structure and the homology classes of analytic cycles: if X is a compact K¨hler manifold, the K¨hler cone K of X is one of the connected components of a a the set P of real (1, 1)-cohomology classes {α} which are numerically positive on analytic cycles, i.e. Y αp 0 for every irreducible analytic...

  • The paper presents the results of a numerical study on the interaction of waves and a submerged breakwater. The numerical study is the application of an advanced numerical model named as CMED, which is based on the Narvier-Stokes equations and VOF (Volume of Fluid) method, and has been previously developed by the author. The consideration is paid for the investigation on the influence of the characteristics of the breakwater on the variation of some parameter coefficients, such as reflection, transmission and energy dissipation coefficients.

  • We study a simple three-lane cellular automaton, based upon the well known NagelSchreckenberg model, and examine the effect of slow cars in such a system. We point out the important parameters defining the shape of the fundamental digram for the three-lane model and compare it to that of a two-lane one, showing the new mode of interactions between lanes. It is possible to reduce the influence of slow cars by choosing an adequate version of the symmetry with respect to lanes.

  • Failure of locking plate fixation due to varus collapse is a common problem for the elderly population who have osteoporotic bone with comminuted fractures. However, it is possible to increase the stability and the stiffness of the fixation system by using intramedullary fibular graft. This study compares the effectiveness of the augmented versus non-augmented locking plate fixation under clinically relevant cyclic loading. Nine pairs of cadaveric humeri were utilized with one side fixated using the augmented system and the other using the non-augmented one.

  • During the last decades, dozens of compounds have been isolated from Mallotus apelta. These compounds which are classified under the categories viz. terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, cumarino-lignoids, cembrane diterpenoids, and benzopyranoids. They were known to exhibit interesting biological activities. The phytochemical investigations revealed that malloapelta B which was the major component of M. apelta, showed strong NF-B and NFAT transcription factor inhibitory and cytotoxic activities. Numerous studies on the synthesis of some derivatives of malloapelta B were carried out.

  • The 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War was brief and entailed few US casualties in comparison with other wars, and yet it had a profound impact on the lives of many of the troops. Among the 700,000 US military personnel deployed in the battle theater, many veterans have reported chronic symptoms and illnesses that they have attributed to their service in the gulf. Numerous studies have been conducted to characterize the long-term adverse health consequences of deployment to the Persian Gulf. Potential exposures to numerous hazardous substances have been identified in association with the Gulf War.

  • It has long been recognized that the common numerals used in daily life are of comparatively recent origin. The number of systems of notation employed before the Christian era was about the same as the number of written languages, and in some cases a single language had several systems. The Egyptians, for example, had three systems of writing, with a numerical notation for each; the Greeks had two well-defined sets of numerals, and the Roman symbols for number changed more or less from century to century.

Tobacco smoke has been shown to cause shifts in the microbial species that comprise dental plaque (Haffajee & Socransky 2001, Kamma et al. 1999, Shiloah et al. 2000, Umeda et al. 1998, van Winkelhoff et al. 2001, Zambon et al. 1996). • This book contains chapters on nanocomposites for engineering hard materials for high performance aircraft, rocket and automobile use, using laser pulses to form metal coatings on glass and quartz, and also tungsten carbide-cobalt nanoparticles using high voltage discharges. A major section of this book is largely devoted to chapters outlining and applying analytic methods needed for studies of nanocomposites. As such, this book will serve as good resource for such analytic methods.

What problems can I solve?, etc. What Does this Toolbox Do? The Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Toolbox provides a powerful and flexible environment for the study and solution of partial differential equations in two space dimensions and time. The equations are discretized by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The objectives of the PDE Toolbox are to provide you with tools that: • Define a PDE problem, i.e.

  • The mitigation of earthquake-related hazards represents a key role in the modern society. The mitigation of such kind of hazards spans from detailed studies on seismicity, evaluation of site effects, and seismo-induced landslides, tsunamis as well as and the design and analysis of structures to resist such actions. The study of earthquakes ties together science, technology and expertise in infrastructure and engineering in an effort to minimize human and material losses when they inevitably occur.

  • In recent years the study of numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations has seen many new developments. This second edition of the author's pioneering text is fully revised and updated to acknowledge many of these developments. It includes a complete treatment of linear multistep methods whilst maintaining its unique and comprehensive emphasis on Runge-Kutta methods and general linear methods. Although the specialist topics are taken to an advanced level, the entry point to the volume as a whole is not especially demanding.
