  • A  numerical  model  based  on  the  2D  shallow  water  equations  was  developed  using  the  Finite Volume Method. The model was applied to the study of long wave propagation and runup  on  a  conical  island.  The  simulated  results  by  the  model  were  compared  with  published  experimental  data  and  analyzed  to  understand  more  about  the  interaction  processes  between  the  long waves and conical island in terms of water profile and wave runup height.

  • The paper presents the results of a numerical study on the interaction of waves and a submerged breakwater. The numerical study is the application of an advanced numerical model named as CMED, which is based on the Narvier-Stokes equations and VOF (Volume of Fluid) method, and has been previously developed by the author. The consideration is paid for the investigation on the influence of the characteristics of the breakwater on the variation of some parameter coefficients, such as reflection, transmission and energy dissipation coefficients.

  • We study a simple three-lane cellular automaton, based upon the well known NagelSchreckenberg model, and examine the effect of slow cars in such a system. We point out the important parameters defining the shape of the fundamental digram for the three-lane model and compare it to that of a two-lane one, showing the new mode of interactions between lanes. It is possible to reduce the influence of slow cars by choosing an adequate version of the symmetry with respect to lanes.

  • Failure of locking plate fixation due to varus collapse is a common problem for the elderly population who have osteoporotic bone with comminuted fractures. However, it is possible to increase the stability and the stiffness of the fixation system by using intramedullary fibular graft. This study compares the effectiveness of the augmented versus non-augmented locking plate fixation under clinically relevant cyclic loading. Nine pairs of cadaveric humeri were utilized with one side fixated using the augmented system and the other using the non-augmented one.

  • During the last decades, dozens of compounds have been isolated from Mallotus apelta. These compounds which are classified under the categories viz. terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, cumarino-lignoids, cembrane diterpenoids, and benzopyranoids. They were known to exhibit interesting biological activities. The phytochemical investigations revealed that malloapelta B which was the major component of M. apelta, showed strong NF-B and NFAT transcription factor inhibitory and cytotoxic activities. Numerous studies on the synthesis of some derivatives of malloapelta B were carried out.

The temperature dependency of material properties and the expanding of plasma channel radius with time have been employed in the simulation stage.
