  • The reactions of the flavin semiquinone generated by laser-induced stepwise two-photon excitation of reduced flavin have been studied previously (El Hanine-Lmoumene C & Lindqvist L. (1997) Photochem Photobiol66, 591–595) using time-resolved spectroscopy. In the present work, we have used the same experimental procedure to study the flavin semiquinone in rat kidney long-chain hydroxy acid oxidase and in the flavodehydrogenase domain of flavocytochrome b2 FDH

  • Amathematicalmodel hasbeendevelopedtostudy theeffect of external tryptophan on the trp operon. The model accounts for the effect of feedback repression by tryptophan through the Hill equation. We demonstrate that the trp operonmaintains an intracellular steady-state concentration in a fivefold range irrespective of extracellular conditions. Dynamic behavior of thetrp operon corresponding to varying levels of extracellular tryptophan illustrates the adaptive nature of regulation.

  • This review describes studies of particular enzymatically catalyzed reactions to investigate the possibility that catalysis is mediated by protein dynamics. That is, evolution has crafted the protein backbone of the enzyme to direct vibrations in such a fashion to speed reaction. The review presents the theoretical approach we have used to investigate this problem, but it is designed for the nonspecialist.

  • The low affinity of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) to hybridize with DNA in the presence of a mismatch endows PNA with a high degree of discriminat-ory capacity that has been exploited in therapeutics for the selective inhibi-tion of the expression of point-mutated genes. To obtain a structural basis for this intriguing property, molecular dynamics simulations are carried out on PNAÆDNA duplexes formed at the Ki-ras proto-oncogene, compri-sing the point-mutated (GAT), and the corresponding wild-type (GGT) codon 12. ...

  • Few of us can any longer keep up with the flood of scientific literature, even in specialized subfields. Any attempt to do more and be broadly educated with respect to a large domain of science has the appearance of tilting at windmills. Yet the synthesis of ideas drawn from different subjects into new, powerful, general concepts is as valuable as ever, and the desire to remain educated persists in all scientists.

  • In a recent contribution, Gallmeyer and Holli…eld (2008) propose a model with heterogeneous beliefs and short sale constraints. They are able to show some e¤ects of heterogeneous beliefs and of short sales constraints on equilibrium volatility at a …xed point in time through extensive simulations. However, their constraints are imposed exogenously, while the rich dynamics obtained in this paper come from the endogenous solvency constraints and binding regimes which arise naturally from limited commitment....

  • Eastern Europe and Central Asia represents a unique situation, where invest- ments in very large farms contrast with an overall contraction of agricultural land use. In the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, the area sown to grains has declined by 30 million ha since the end of the Soviet era. These croplands were mostly returned to pastures or fallow, due to lack of suitable technology and market access. Large farms were better able to deal with financing, infrastructure, and technology constraints of the transition, lead- ing to considerable concentration.

  • Aberrant regulation of protein kinases impairs normal cellular functioning and may lead to disease. The protein kinase involved in the regulation of the dynamics of the actin cytoskeleton, Rho-kinase (ROCK), phosphory-lates various substrates (e.g. myosin light chain, myosin phosphatase), caus-ing the formation of actin fibers and tension inside cells.

  • Corn gluten meal is a natural pre-emergent fertilizer (9.5-0.5-0.5) that reduces the germination and establishment of troublesome annual weeds. It is available as a powder or in granular form. It is 60 percent protein and approximately 10 percent nitrogen by weight. It is a by-product of the wet milling process and commonly used in pet and livestock feed. It can be used in vegetable gardens as a fertilizer and can help with weed control, but be careful. It can damage the germination of your food crops. Use it only after your vegetable seeds are up and young plant roots are...
