  • Tendons are known to have a profound impact on the overall function of the musculoskeletal system in their role as a structural link and force transmitter between muscle and bone. Their unique viscoelastic response under tension allows efficient use and recycling of stored energy during stretch involved in locomotion, modulating joint position control, and providing protection from muscle injuries through reduction of mechanical oscillation and shock.

  • FMIs play a critical role in the financial system and the broader economy. For the purposes of this report, the term FMI refers to systemically important payment systems, CSDs, SSSs, CCPs, and TRs. 2 These infrastructures facilitate the clearing, settlement, and recording of monetary and other financial transactions, such as payments, securities, and derivatives contracts (including derivatives contracts for commodities). While safe and efficient FMIs contribute to maintaining and promoting financial stability and economic growth, FMIs also concentrate risk.

  • The rst seven variables contain information about the general state of the economy and help to identify monetary policy and capital inows shocks. The model includes both short-term and long-term interest rates. In our sample of countries short-term interest rates are largely controlled by central banks. Using movements in nominal short rates to identify monetary policy shocks is standard in VARs that study monetary policy (see eg Christiano et al (1999)). Long-term interest rates, on the other hand, tend to be driven by nancial market outcomes.

  • The delayed response to economic shocks or to changes in monetary policy which characterize the ináation expectations and the interest rate dynamics is also explained by the existence of this asymmetric information set between private agents and monetary authorities. Hence, Huh and Lansing (2000) and Erceg and Levin (2001) are two models which demonstrate how an ináation scare problem could produce a sharp increase of long-term interest rates, as for the Volcker disináation period of the early 1980s and the 1987 ináation scare episode.

  • Severity of complications is another important measure of effects on health. A standardised measure of the severity of complications was used in South Africa before and after legalisation of abortion on request in 1996. The proportion of women classified with severe complications (fever of 38°C or more, organ or system failure, generalised peritonitis, pulse 120 per min or more, shock, evidence of a foreign body, or mechanical injury) in South Africa fell substantially from 16·5% before legalisation to 9·7% after.

  • A main aspect of our empirical exercise concerns the nature of the shock affect- ing the economy. The introduction of cloud computing allows firms from all sectors to reduce fixed costs in ICT and turn part of them into variable costs. In our analy- sis we focus on the reduction in the fixed cost associated with the introduction of cloud computing.

  • We recently reported that the transient expression of polyglutamine tracts of various size in exon 1 of the huntingtin polypeptide (httEx1) generated abnormally high levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species that directly contributed to cell death. Here, we compared the protection generated by heat shock proteins to that provided by the antioxidant agentN-acetyl-l-cysteine.

  • Relatedly, controlling for the forecast error of the change in fiscal policy does not, in our application, provide a way of estimating the causal effect of fiscal policy on growth. Over the two-year intervals that we consider, changes in fiscal policy are unlikely to be orthogonal to economic developments. Thus, the forecast error of fiscal consolidation over our two-year intervals cannot be interpreted as an identified fiscal shock and cannot yield estimates of actual fiscal multipliers. A large literature seeks to identify such exogenous shifts in government spending and revenues.

  • Anaphylactic Reaction This severe reaction presents after transfusion of only a few milliliters of the blood component. Symptoms and signs include difficulty breathing, coughing, nausea and vomiting, hypotension, bronchospasm, loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest, and shock. Treatment includes stopping the transfusion, maintaining vascular access, and administering epinephrine (0.5–1.0 mL of 1:1000 dilution subcutaneously). Glucocorticoids may be required in severe cases.

  • The large size of the four banks relative to GDP and the banking system behooves careful attention to their vulnerabilities and resilience to shocks. 2 Any distress among these banks could have a sizable impact on the financial sector and the real economy in Australia and New Zealand. 3 Moreover, they may be perceived by the markets as too big to fail, which implies they could pose a potential fiscal liability.

  • The induction of the heat shock response as well as its termination is auto-regulated by heat shock protein activities. In this study we have investi-gated whether Hsp90 functional protein levels influence the characteristics and duration of the heat shock response. Treatment of cells with several benzoquinone ansamycin inhibitors of Hsp90 (geldanamycin, herbimycin A) activated a heat shock response in the absence of heat shock, as reported previously.
