  • Further, Fich and Shivdasani (2006) find that firms with a majority of their outside directors serving on three or more boards have lower profitability. Thus busy non- executive directors may be over-committed and therefore unable to fulfil the role of effective monitors. In addition, Vafeas (2003) reports that longer outside director tenure adversely affects firm performance. Hwang and Kim (2009) find that the existence of substantial social ties between outside directors and top management diminishes the effectiveness of the monitoring role of non-executive directors. ...

  • This stability provided reassurance that we could calculate an average rate for each age cohort from across the five AHS periods (i.e., 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003). We then applied these calculated rates to the Census population projections. The result is a reasonable set of projections for the number of householders, within each age group, through 2030. One of our research goals was to extend this to projections of tenure status (i.e., owning vs. renting) for each age group. In order to do this, we used a method similar to that used to calculate the...

  • Rapid population growth by itself may not always result in environmental degradation. There is case study evidence that some farm households and communities develop technical and institutional innovations in natural resource management in response to increasing pressures on resources. Such responses do not happen in all areas however, and need to be induced and supported through policy measures and other development interventions (for example in the areas of tenure, reorientation of agricultural research and extension, etc.).

  • Tenure legislation also is often blind or hostile to the traditional claims of indigenous communities and disregards their natural resource management systems and rights. Policies fostering the colonisation of indigenous areas – sometimes to divert pressure for land reform effectively encourage colonists to treat land occupied by indigenous communities as “open-access”. 7 State policies have also had a significant impact on the property regimes governing large- scale grazing lands, and consequently on pastoralists’ livelihoods.

  • HIV and AIDS have had a devastating impact on the world’s women. In 2008, of the 33.4 million people living with HIV worldwide, 15.7 million, nearly half, were women (UNAIDS, 2009). Grassroots women living in developing regions particularly in Africa and the Caribbean have been especially hard hit. Not only do women seem to be more vulnerable than men to HIV infection, but they also are more greatly affected by the impacts of HIV and AIDS, because of socioeconomic, cultural and political power disparities, and because they tend to absorb the vast majority of the burden of care. ...

  • Lack of secure land tenure and ownership also has a negative impact on women’s ability to reduce their vulnerability to HIV through greater economic as well as physical security and autonomy. When a woman does not own land, it often means that she is denied other economic opportunities, such as collateral for credit. Most women in the Huairou Commission have reported frustration at not being able to access adequate financing for improvement of what little land they may have, or for actually gaining or purchasing land or other property.
