Pronunciation * Read the following phrases. Pay attention to how the full and contracted forms of the auxiliaries are pronounced. 1. I’ve got something for you. * Practise reading these sentences: 2. You’ve got something for me? 3. We’ve failed and they’ve passed. 4. I haven’t always lived in this cottage, you know. 5. Haven’t you? You’ve not been here long, of course. 6. I haven’t. But I’ve grown to love it already. 7. He’s left, and she’s gone to work, too. 8. Hasn’t the doctor come yet? 9. No. The doctor hasn’t been called.
Grammar What are prepositions? - on, in, at, between, among, opposite, under, behind, in front of, from ... to..., for, since, above,... * between A and B: ở giữa (2 người/ vật) * among: nằm trong số nhiều người/ vật * opposite: đối diện * across: băng qua
1. On time: đúng giờ (eg: go to class on time / go to work on time) In time for something / to do something: kịp lúc (eg: come home in time to have dinner/to watch a TV program)
2. die of (a disease/ hunger/ thirst): chết vì (bệnh/ đói/ khát) die by (violence): chết vì (bạo lực) die for (the country): chết vì (đất nước) die in (a car crash/ an accident): chết vì (tai nạn)
3. be on business = go on business: đi công tác be in business = a businessman: doanh nhân 4. In the end = finally: cuối cùng At the end of something: cuối 1 cái gì (eg: at the end of the lesson/ the meeting)
5. a true friend to somebody: 1 người bạn tốt đối với ai đó 6. believe in something/somebody: tin tưởng vào (khả năng) 7. warn somebody about/ against something: cảnh báo ai về cái gì 8. be famous for something: nổi tiếng về 9. get married to somebody: kết hôn với ai
Exercise :1 Choose the appropriate prepositions. 1. Luckily, you are in /on time for the meeting. 2. Many people are dying of / by various types of cancer. 3. I will not be here next week. I am going to be on / in business in Mexico. 4. At / In the end of the book, they get married and live happily ever after. 5. Thank you for everything you’ve done. You are a true friend of / to me.
Exercise :1 Choose the appropriate prepositions. 6. I can’t believe in / to you. You always let me down. 7. I have warned you on / about the difficulties you have to face when applying for the job. 8. Britney Spears is famous by / for her beautiful face and sweet voice. 9. The bookshop is among / between the chemist’s and the butcher's and across / opposite the library. 10. Next year, I am going to get married to / with John and we are going to move to Bristol.
ARTICLES * a/an : mạo từ không xác định. 1. a: đứng trước 1 danh từ bắt đầu bằng phụ âm. eg: a train [trein] 2. an: đứng trước 1 danh từ bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm. eg : an honest ['ɔnist] * Chỉ dùng “a/an” trước danh từ số ít, đếm được.
ARTICLES * the : mạo từ xác định. - trước danh từ đã được biết bởi người nói và người nghe. eg: I visit a child. The child has been ill for 5 days - trước so sánh nhất eg : He was person I’ve ever admired. - trước danh từ chỉ sông, núi, biển; môn âm nhạc,... eg: Columbus was one of the first people to cross
ARTICLES * zero article (không dùng mạo từ): - go by car, go by train, go by bus - on Monday, on Tuesday, last week, last month - England, English, (the Philippines)... - Minh, Lan, Peter... - Christmas, ...
