An accidental death

Although medication poisoning in older adults is considered an increasingly important, but prevent‑ able cause of death, it has received relatively little attention. We explored recent trends and correlates of suicidal and accidental fatal drug poisonings among older and working-age individuals using nationwide data from Spain.

Falls are the second leading cause of accidental deaths worldwide mainly in older people. Older people have poor vision and published evidence suggests that it is a risk factor for falls. Less than half of falls clinics assess vision as part of the multi-factorial assessment of older adults at risk of falls despite vision being an essential input for postural stability.

A carcass of a pregnant gilt of one year old was subjected for post mortem examination and was due for farrowing after 16 days. The day before death, the gilt introduced her head into the farrowing crate through the lower most guard pipe. After about 1/1/2 hrs of struggle she was released forcefully by the attendants. The gilt died after 2 hours. Based on history, circumstantial evidences and gross lesions the cause of death was ascertained as asphyxia and shock.

With an overall incidence of more than 800 cases per 1 million persons per year, only motor vehicle accidents cause more accidental deaths than burns. Advances in trauma and burn management over the past three decades have resulted in improved survival and reduced morbidity from major burns. Twenty-five years ago, the mortality rate of a 50% body surface area burn in a young adult was about 50%, despite treatment. Today, that same burn results in less than 10% mortality. Ten years ago, an 80 to 90% body surface area burn yielded 10% survival. Today, over 50% of these patients survive....
