Hepcidin (H25) is a hormone peptide synthesized by the liver that binds to ferroportin and blocks iron export. In this study, H25 was inhibited by administration of single and multiple doses of an anti-H25 monoclonal antibody Ab 12B9m in cynomolgus monkeys. The objective of this analysis was to develop a pharmacodynamic model describing the role of H25 in regulating iron homeostasis and the impact of hepcidin inhibition by Ab 12B9m. Total serum H25 and Ab 12B9m were determined in each animal. Corresponding measurements of serum iron and hemoglobin (Hb) were obtained.

This thesis researched the influence of ETBs on exporters from developing countries and their corresponding strategies through a case study of the Chinese organic food industry. Initially, a description of international trade and world export was developed, including their roles in the process of globalization. Trade barriers generated in international trade were then explained, with the focus on NTBs, especially ETBs. Lastly, the link between ETBs and market access was described and then the purpose of this study was proposed.

Murine pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) cDNA encoding a 1545 amino-acid protein has been cloned. We have also identified and cloned cDNA that encodes a novel variant of PAPP-A, PAPP-Ai, carrying a 29-residue highly basic insert. The point of insertion corresponds to a junction between two exons in the human PAPP-A gene. The human intron flanked by these exons does not encode a homologous corresponding insert, which is unique to the mouse.

The binding of several alkyl- and aryl-guanidines andN-hydroxyguanidines to the oxygenase domain of inducible NO-synthase (iNOSoxy) was studied by UV⁄Vis difference spectroscopy. In a very general manner, monosubsti-tuted guanidines exhibited affinities for iNOSoxy that were very close to those of the corresponding N-hydroxyguanidines. The highest affinities were observed for the natural substrates,l-arginine and N x -hydroxy-l-arginine (Kd at thelmlevel).

Many organelle enzymes coded for by nuclear genes have N-terminal sequences, which directs them into the organelle (precursor) and are removed upon import (mature). The experiments described below charac-terize the differences between the precursor and mature forms of water-melon glyoxysomal malate dehydrogenase. We study the Radon transform Rf of functions on Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds. We establish a connection between Rf and G˚ arding-Gindikin fractional integrals associated to the cone of positive definite matrices. By using this connection, we obtain Abel-type representations and explicit inversion formulae for Rf and the corresponding dual Radon transform.
