Effectiveness of iron

Pneumonia is a potentially fatal disease that greatly compromises the health of children. Utilizing laboratory tests is extremely beneficial in the diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis determination of the condition. In the realm of pediatric pneumonia, effective diagnostic procedures include assessments for albumin levels and iron deficiency anemia.

In this Masters thesis computational modelling techniques were employed to investigate iron-free apo-Lactoferrin (apo-Lf) structural conformation changes in the presence of variant temperature and pH. These conditions represent the environment most milk protein goes through in food processing and the production of food products.

The beneficial influence of dietary curcumin, capsaicin and their combina-tion on the susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) to oxidation was examined in an animal study. Individually, both dietary curcumin and capsaicin significantly inhibited thein vivo iron-induced LDL oxidation, as well as copper-induced oxidation of LDLin vitro. The protective effect of the combination of curcumin and capsaicin on LDL oxidation was greater than that of individual compounds.

Exposure of mammalian cells to oxidant stress causes early (iron catalysed) lysosomal rupture followed by apoptosis or necrosis. Enhanced intracellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), presumably of mitochondrial origin, is also observed when cells are exposed to nonoxidant pro-apoptotic agonists of cell death. We hypothesized that ROS generation in this latter case might promote the apoptotic cascade and could arise from effects of released lysosomal materials on mitochondria.

Intravenous iron, used for the treatment of anemia in chronic renal failure andother diseases, represents a possible source of free iron in tissue cells, particularly in the liver. In this study we examined the effect of different sources of intravenous iron (IVI) on the labile iron pool (LIP) which represents the nonferritin-bound, redox-active iron that is implicated in oxidative stress and cell injury. Furthermore, we examined the role of the LIP for the synthesis of ferritin.

The therapeutic effect of iron (Fe) chelators on the poten-tially toxic plasma pool of nontransferrin-bound iron (NTBI), often present in Fe overload diseases and in some cancer patients during chemotherapy, is of considerable interest. In the present investigation, several multidentate pyridinones were synthesized and compared with their bidentateanalogue, deferiprone

The structure of cytochromec-550 from the nonphotosynthetic bacteria Paraccocus versutushas been solved by X-ray crystallography to 1.90 A˚ resolution, and reveals a high structural homology to other bacterial cyto-chromesc2. The effect of replacing the axial heme-iron methionine ligand with a lysine residue on protein structure and unfolding has been assessed using the M100K variant.

Circular dichroism (CD) spectra of two major hemoglobin components (Hb), HbI and HbIV, from Oncorhyncus mykiss(formerly Salmo irideus) trout were evaluated in the range 250–600 nm. HbI is characterized by a complete insensitivity to pH changes, while HbIV presents the Root effect. Both reduced [iron(II) or oxy] and oxidized (met) forms of the two proteins were studied at different pHs, 7.8 and 6.0, to obtain information about the pH effects on the structural features of these hemoglobins.

The mitochondrial cytochromeb missense mutation, G167E, has been reported inapatientwithcardiomyopathy. The residue G167 is located in an extramembranous helix close to the hinge region of the iron–sulfur protein. In order to characterize the effects of the mutation on the structure and function of thebc1complex, we introducedG167E into the highly similar yeast cytochromeb. The mutation had a severe effect on the respiratory function, with the activity of thebc1complex decreased to a fewper cent of the wild type....

Several studies have shown that deficient uptake or excessive break down of membrane phospholipids may be associated with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of postnatal iron administration in lipid composition and behavior and whether or not the established effects may be altered by subchronic administration of the neuroleptic compounds, clozapine and haloperidol.

Helicobacter pylorineutrophil-activating protein (HP-NAP) protects DNA from free radicals as a dodecamer through its ferroxidase activity without, however, directly binding to it. The retardation that was observed at pH 7.5 could be easily attributed to an iron effect, as it was revealed by experiments in the absence of HP-NAP.
