Ebook "Highly luminescent lanthanide complexes with specific coordination structures" deals with strongly luminescent lanthanide complexes having novel coordination structures. Luminescent lanthanide complexes are promising candidates as active materials for EL devices, lasers, and bio-sensing applications. The organic ligands in lanthanide complexes control geometrical and vibrational frequency structures that are closely related to the luminescent properties.

Ebook "Metal-organic frameworks for photonics applications" is to give the reader, whether at a university or in industry, a comprehensive overview of an area where new insights are emerging that are of interest to a larger scientific audience. Thus each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years should be presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed.

The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks has attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications as functional materials in catalysis; 1,2 gas sorption, storage, and separation; 3,4 molecular magnetism5 and recognition; 6 and nonlinear optics. 7 While the synthesis of fascinating self-assembly metal-organic coordination polymers occurs via bridging ligand and also through weak noncovalent interactions, such as π − π stacking or hydrogen bonding, 8−20 the construction of metal-organic compounds mainly depends on the nature of the organic ligands and metal ions.

In 1 the Zn 2+ cation is tetracoordinated with 2 nitrogen atoms from 2 imidazoles and 2 oxygen atoms from the 2 carboxyl groups in 5-chlorhydroxybenzoate. In 2 the coordination polyhedrons of Cu 2+ center can be described as distorted square pyramidal geometry sharing common edges, with an oxygen atom on the top of the pyramid. The hydrogen bonds and π − π interactions between the 2 ligands contribute to the presence of the infinite one-dimensional chain in the structure.

In the present work, a green emitting composite with attractive photoluminescent properties was obtained through the embedding of the Tb3+ complex with N-hydroxyphthalimide in a poly-(N-vinyl-pyrrolidone) matrix, which was further processed in thin or thick films. First, several complexes of Gd3+, Tb3+, and Y3+ with N-hydroxyphthalimide with the general formula [M(NHF)3(DMF)2] were prepared at a 1:3 metal/ligand ratio. The Tb3+ complex presents specific emission peaks, with the most intense peak located at 543 nm, thus being selected for incorporation in the poly(N-vinyl-pyrrolidone) matrix.

The precursor PVP-capped α-NaYF4 :Yb3+/Er3+ nanospheres were used as the templates for preparing the α-NaYF4 :Yb3+/Er3+/PVP/MOFs multilayer nanocrystals with a self-template method. By using iron (III) carboxylate and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution containing 25% of diethylene glycol (DEG), the sphericalshaped α-NaYF4 :Yb3+/Er3+/PVP/MIL-100 and α-NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+/PVP/ ZIF-8 multilayer nanocrystals were successfully prepared with the sizes of 300-500 nm at 100o C for one hour.

Vertebrate metallothioneins are found to contain Zn(II) and variable amounts of Cu(I),in vivo, and are believed to be important for d 10 -metal control. To date, structural information is available for the Zn(II) and Cd(II) forms, but not for the Cu(I) or mixed metal forms. Cu(I) binding to metallothionein-1 has been investigated by circular dichroism, luminescence and 1 H NMR using two synthetic fragments representing thea- and the b-domain.

In this paper, materials of ZnS:Cu, ZnS:Mn and ZnO:Co were prepared by ceramic method and co-precipitated method. The presence of transition metals such as Cu2+(3d9), Mn2+(3d5) in ZnS and Co2+(3d7) in ZnO make blue bands at around 476 nm, 486 nm and green band at around 514 nm disappeared. Simultaneously, there are luminescence bands at around 533 nm, 582 nm, 693 nm for bulk samples of ZnS:Cu, ZnS:Mn, ZnO:Co and 603 nm for nanocrystalline sample of ZnS:Mn.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) is a non-destructive technique to characterize optical and electronic properties of nanostructures in many kinds of materials. Major subject is to investigate basic parameters in semiconductors, impurities in oxides and phase determination of minerals. CL is similar to photoluminescence (PL) technique, but the excitation by high energy electrons can produce all the transition to the higher energy excitation states and induce light emission in the wide energy range concerned with versatile types of electronic transitions in materials....
