LWR fuel assemblies

A simulation-based study concerning three non-destructive approaches by which water in spent nuclear fuel assemblies might be quantified with neutrons is described. Three fuel types have been considered: thirty-six spent Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) fuel pins contained in a stainless-steel can; a prototype fast reactor (PFR) spent fuel assembly and a light water reactor (LWR) spent fuel assembly – with the PFR and LWR assemblies containing mixed oxide fuels.

The purpose of the present work is to describe the methodology applied for determining the activation of these nuclides in fuel assembly structural materials by means of coupled depletion/activation calculations and also to crosscheck the results obtained from two approaches.

This article shows how the most recent gadolinium cross sections evaluations appear inadequate to provide accurate criticality calculations for a system with gadolinium fuel pins. In this article, a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis (S/U) has been performed to investigate the effect of gadolinium odd isotopes nuclear cross sections data on the multiplication factor of some LWR fuel assemblies.

The corresponding neutron transport calculations are performed with the deterministic discrete-ordinates code NEWT. In addition, the Monte Carlo code KENO in multi-group mode is used to demonstrate a method with which the number of neutron histories per calculation run can be substantially reduced as compared to that in a calculation for the nominal case without uncertainties, while uncertainties and sensitivities are obtained with almost the same accuracy.
