Master's thesis of Mechanical Engineering: Analysis of a vibration isolator with dual rate spring and damperIn the course of current research the procedure of obtaining of the piecewise linear vibration systems time and frequency responses have been developed. The method is partly analytical and partly numerical and is based on combining of linear solutions of different sections in a cycle of motion. In a row with the method of obtaining of the exact steady state time and frequency response, also it is provided sensitivity analysis of the vibration isolator. Numerical challenges that were raised during the modeling of the system’s frequency response and possible solutions of them have been considered. In addition, different normalizations of the model of the system are reviewed and their impact on the results is discussed.

Master's thesis of Engineering: Detailed analysis of the relationship between geometry and airflow in older Chinese adult male nasal cavitiesThis study aims to use CFD analysis of CT scan data from the nasal cavities of a range of older Asian males to investigate the impact of geometric variations between older nasal cavities on the airflow structures and airconditioning capacity of the nasal cavity. Air flow mechanisms, heat transfer rates and humidification efficacy are analysed in order to arrive at a more precise understanding of the role of nasal geometry in the presentation of respiratory ailments.

Master's thesis of Engineering: Development of a MEMS device to continuously monitor glaucomaThe objective of this thesis was to investigate the development of a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) which can be implanted in the eye to provide continuous monitoring of glaucoma conditions. Current glaucoma monitoring involves taking laboratory based intra ocular pressure (IOP) measurements. The measurement of intraocular fluid flow and IOP parameters related to blockage formation in the eye require to be continuously monitored in Glaucoma. Making blockage related information available to patients could indicate the conditions leading to a blockage and help to improve glaucoma treatment and reduce the risk of permanent blindness.

This project involves the deep immersion of the design-researcher into a competitive Solar Car Team for the World Solar Challenge and demonstrates design research in action through the processes of: exterior and interior solar car design; iterative design in concert with engineering analysis; the full manufacture a working Solar vehicle; testing; and, ultimately driving the vehicle from Darwin to Adelaide.

Master's thesis of Engineering: Radiation hard FPGA configuration techniques using silicon on sapphireOnce entirely the domain of space-borne applications, the effects of high energy charged particles on electronics systems is now also a concern for terrestrial devices. Reconfigurable components such as FPGAs are particularly vulnerable to radiation single event effects (SEU) as they carry a large amount of memory within a relatively small amount of circuit area. This thesis presents a Silicon on Insulator (SOI) based configuration memory system in a radiation hard reconfiguration system. The SOI technology used in this particular work is Silicon on Sapphire, where Sapphire is used as the body insulator.

The main contribution of the research is to identify the real development impact of lCT use by social enterprises by assessing the role of ICTs in achieving their goals. Its major finding is that SEs' social and business missions are inextricably linked .and their use of ICTs and benefits from it can be used as a proxy to assess ICTD. Thus SEs provide a new paradigm in the study of ICTD.

Master's thesis of Technology: Development of automotive textiles with antiodour/antimicrobial propertiesThe aim of this research is to explore the application of natural biopolymer chitosan for the purpose of incorporating fragrance oil into automotive fabrics and its antimicrobial properties relevant to automotive interior textiles. Chitosan was selected for this study for its film forming ability and inherent antimicrobial attributes. 100% polyester automotive fabrics were used in this study, as 100% polyester is predominant fibre used for automotive interior textiles. Application of strawberry fragrance oil was firstly studied on 100% polyester woven fabric treated with chitosan as a binder by pad-dry-cure process. It was concluded that the fragrance oil, due to its volatility, was not durable on the fabric.

Linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO) are the most frequently detected anionic and non-ionic surfactants in urban wastewater. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the presence of anionic and non-ionic surfactants in the influent to WWTPs on activated sludge processes.

Master's thesis of Engineering: An historical based adaptation mechanism for BDI agentsOne of the limitations of the BDI (Belief-Desire-Intention) model is the lack of any explicit mechanisms within the architecture to be able to learn. In particular, BDI agents do not possess the ability to adapt based on past experience. This is important in dynamic environments as they can change, causing previously successful methods for achieving goals to become inefficient or ineffective. This theis present a model in which learning, analogous reasoning, data pruning and learner accuracy evaluation can be utilised by a BDI agent and verify this model experimentally using Inductive and Statistical learning.
