This book outlines the currently available clinical, epidemiological and experimental data on Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) with special emphasis on studies and results achieved in Europe. The book also gives an overview on diagnostics, therapy and surveillance, all of which are still challenging. Therefore, a closer look is taken on the effect of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics, for prevention and treatment of CDI.

75% of the mortality associated with burn injuries is related to infection The aim of the present study was to identify the bacterial profile of burn wound infection (BWI) in our setting and determine their susceptibility pattern to commonly used antibiotics.This prospective study was conducted over a period of one year in a teaching tertiary care hospital, Chennai. A total of 100 patients with burns of total body surface area (TBSA) of 20% to 40% were included. Three wound swabs on 1st , 4 th and 7th day were collected aseptically and processed.

Microbiological infection plays vital role in determining the outcome as well as cost and duration of the hospital stay for patients admitted in ICU setup. Of late nosocomial infections especially ventilator associated pneumonias (VAP) have been recognized to be associated with significant morbidity and mortality in intubated patients. It is of critical importance to do regular surveillance of important pathogen (like Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase producers) and its resistance pattern.

The detection of extended- spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria is important for infection control and epidemiological surveillance. The purpose of the present study was to compare two phenotypic methods for detection of ESBL positive Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in urinary isolates. This study was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, Rama Medical College, Kanpur(U.P), India from November 2015 to August 2016.

The study included 150 patients admitted in burns unit at Osmania General Hospital, Hyderabad over a period of six months from March 2015 to August 2015. The wound swabs collected were sent to Microbiology lab for Grams stain, Culture and Antimicrobial susceptibility. Majority of the cases were in the age group 20- 30 yrs. Females outnumbered males. Burns due to flames were the most common cause of the wound. Among 150 samples, 143 were culture positive of which, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was the predominant isolate followed by Klebsiella.

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections especially in developing countries. It shows lot of regional variation in causative pathogens and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. Hence requires regular regionwise surveillance. Urine samples received at microbiology laboratory from patients with symptomatology of urinary tract infection were included in the study. All the samples were processed according to standard protocol, identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing was done.

Foodstuffs is a favorable environment for microorganism’s growth. Thus, the germs likely to be found in these foods can be at the base of several food poisoning. The objective of the study was to evaluate the microbiological quality of some foods prepared and sold in Benin. To do this, a prospective descriptive survey was conducted in five major cities (Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, Porto-Novo, Lokossa and Abomey) of Benin. It collected samples of salted bread, soy cheese and three yogurt varieties (Dolait, Tropical and Comtesse) for microbiological analyzes.

To determine the most common organisms causing surgical site infections and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. This study was carried out retrospectively in the Department of Microbiology SKIMS Medical College and associated hospital, Srinagar for a period of two years (January 2017–December 2018). A total number of 194 pus samples of inpatients from different wards as well as of out-patients were processed using standard microbiological techniques. Of the 194 pus samples processed, 94 samples were culture positive (48.4%).
