  • The importance of particle characterization in both the research and development, and the manufacture and quality control of materials and products that we use in our everyday lives is, in some sense, invisible to those of us not directly involved with these activities. Few of us know how particle size, shape, or surface characteristics can influence, for example, the efficacy of a painreliever, or the efficiency of a catalytic converter, or the resolution of a printer.

  • An overview of PTB’s activities in the field of dimensional nanometrology using scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) is presented. The chapter is divided into two parts: the development of (1) high-resolution probing systems and (2) complete SPM metrology systems. The subject of SPM-probing system design comprises, among other things, the concept of the “sensor objective” to combine conventional microscopy with scanning probe techniques.

  • In this research, strontium hexa-ferrite nanoparticles (SrFe12O19) were synthesized by sol-gel method. The crystal structure, morphology and magnetic properties of nanoparticles were investigated using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The XRD patterns confirmed the formation of single phase M-type hexagonal crystal structure for powders which was calcined above 700oC.

  • The structural properties of these nanocomposites were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR). The scanning electron microscope (SEM) photo showed that the TiO2– SiO2 layer is thicker than TiO2 layer on the cotton fabric and PES/Co fabric and the Ti–particles were always surrounded by amorphous SiO2 and never alone by themselves. The TiO2–SiO2 nanocomposites were coated onto cotton and PES/Co fabrics by a simple dip–pad–dry–cure process.

  • This study focuses on formulation of the Augmented Lagrangian and application of the Uzawa’s algorithm to solve the homogenization problem of microscopic periodic media as in composites. Unlike in the finite element model, an equally spaced grid system associated with the microstructure domain is used instead of a finite element mesh topology.

  • This is the first book to cover the history, structure, and application of atomic force microscopy in cell biology. Presented in the clear, well-illustrated style of the Methods in Cell Biology series, it introduces the atomic force microscope (AFM) to its readers and enables them to tap the power and scope of this technology to further their own research. A practical laboratory guide for use of the atomic force and photonic force microscopes, it provides updated technology and methods in force spectroscopy.

  • Today, an individual would be hard-pressed to find any science field that does not employ methods and instruments based on the use of fine focused electron and ion beams. Well instrumented and supplemented with advanced methods and techniques, SEMs provide possibilities not only of surface imaging but quantitative measurement of object topologies, local electrophysical characteristics of semiconductor structures and performing elemental analysis.

  • Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer diagnosed in Western populations. Autopsy studies have shown that with increasing age, the majority of men will develop microscopic foci of cancer (often termed “latent” prostate cancer) and that this is true in populations that are at both high and low risk for the invasive form of the disease (1). However, only a small percentage of men will develop invasive prostate cancer. The prevalence of prostate cancer is, thus, very common; but to most men, prostate cancer will be only incidental to their health and death....

  • In this project, you draw an unusual microscopic animal commonly referred to as a water flea. As with many advanced projects, both verbal instructions and visual steps may seem complex, as it is assumed that you already have strong drawing skills. However, you may be able to successfully complete this project with only basic skills if you have completed most of the lessons in the beginner sections. This project consists of the following three sections:

  • he Group A β-hemolytic streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes, or GAS) is a form of β-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria. It is a gram positive bacteriaum responsible for a wide range of both invasive and non-invasive infections.[1] The name derives from the greek word 'streptos,' meaning 'twisted chain,' due to the fact that the bacteria resembles a string of small pearls when viewed under the microscope

  • In 1665, a book was published that inaugurated the use of the microscope to investigate the natural world. The author was Robert Hooke, a talented artist, architect, and amateur scientist. Hooke wrote Micrographia: Or Some Physiological Descriptions of Minute Bodies Made by Magnifying Glasses with Observations and Inquiries Thereupon, at the behest of the newly chartered Royal Society in London, for whom he was working as curator of scientific experiments. In Micrographia, he presented the first detailed observations of everyday objects made with his self-constructed light microscope....

  • The air pollution accumulating in the interior of automobiles consists almost exclusively of gaso- line and diesel exhaust. This toxic soup of gases, aerosols, and microscopic particles includes ben- zene (a known carcinogen), carbon monoxide (which interferes with the blood’s ability to trans- port oxygen), particulate matter (which studies have associated with increased death rates), and a host of other hazardous chemicals.
