This evolution has been largely driven by increased public awareness of environmental issues, their international aspects and their linkages with economic and social issues. Research in the OECD countries consistently shows that job growth in the entrepreneurial sector is substantially higher than it is among established (corporate) incumbents (Audretsch and Thurik, 2001). More recently, the international buzz about entrepreneurship has become even more pronounced with the explosion of new technology, rise in the availability and use of equity capital and breaking down of economic and trade barriers.

  • While the links between ICT and environmental outcomes are becoming clearer, there is no separate statistical field that links the two. Nevertheless, some data are available from official statistical sources, from analytical work and from product life cycle studies. This report suggests a conceptual framework for the new statistical field “ICT and the environment” based on an existing OECD framework for information society statistics. Sources of official data to populate the framework are investigated and some relevant work has been identified.

In childcare settings, the surfaces of floors, activity and food tables, diaper changing tables, doorknobs, toilet room surfaces, toys, and fabric objects may have many germs on them if they are not properly cleaned and sanitized.

  • Environmental indicators are essential tools for tracking environmental progress, supporting policy evaluation and informing the public. Since the early 1990s, such indicators have gained in importance in many countries and in international fora. As part of their commitment to transparency and to better information of the public, OECD countries increasingly use a reduced number of indicators, so-called “key indicators”, selected from larger sets to report on major environmental issues.
