In this paper, we develop a dynamic general equilibrium model, where agents are heterogeneous in terms of wealth and entrepreneurial talent, to study the effects of financial inclusion. From our structural analytical framework, we obtain some important properties, which are helpful to understand the effect of financial inclusion in capital allocation and poverty reduction. On the basis of this framework, one could make a quantitative evaluation of the policy impact of financial inclusion by calibrating the model with data of different countries.

This paper is based on the premise that, urbanisation could be effective only if decentralisation policy is at the centre of development initiatives. In this way the paper argues, local authorities could utilize local resources to ignite local economic development (LED) through for instance trade activities and investments.LED initiatives aim at empowering local stakeholders to utilise business enterprises, labour, capital and other local resources effectively to maximise local benefits in order to contribute to poverty reduction and the uplifting of citizens life conditions.

The growth experience of India and other South Asian countries suggests that a “Service Revolution”—rapid income growth, job creation, gender equality, and poverty reduction led by services—is now possible. What is a service revolution? Can services be as dynamic as manufacturing? Can latecomers to development take advantage of the globalization of services? Can services be a driver of sustained growth, job creation, and poverty reduction? What kind of policies and institutions do developing countries need to benefit from services-led growth?...

This book originated in a study initially prepared for the World Bank in early 2002 as part of the background work for a report on Land Policies for Growth and Poverty Reduction, by Klaus Deininger (published for the World Bank by Oxford University Press, 2003). We are most grateful to Klaus Deininger for the invitation to take part in this work and for the opportunity to discuss our initial findings at regional workshops convened by the Bank in Budapest and Pachuca, Mexico.

The second generation CCS is developed at the same time as Mozambique reaches the last stage of the implementation of its second Poverty Reduction Programme (PARPA – Plano de Acção para a Redução da Pobreza Absoluta), and as the country prepares to assess its achievements, and review the challenges and constraints relating to the acceleration of interventions for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This is also a time when key policy documents and plans are being developed and approved, following the formulation of the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2007–2012.

Agricultural development is widely recognized as crucial for poverty reduction. At the same time, agricultural expansion and ever more intensive practices are widely recognized for their contribution to ecosystem degradation. Less well recognized is that, in many cases, agriculture offers the potential to generate both poverty reduction and better environmental outcomes. The studies presented in this volume look at one policy tool that may address this gap: payments for environmental services (PES).
