  • Having worked in and traveled to many countries, most recently as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations, I have seen people in different societies react to trauma in various ways. While experts contributed to this important book, Trauma Psychology: Issues in Violence, Disaster, Health, and Illness, I share my perspectives from serving the people of Thailand and other nations and from my experiences in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami that struck the cities and towns in the Indian Ocean rim, including Thailand.

  • It is clear from the pages that follow that the physical abuse of one individual by another, or by both individuals of each other, is an integral component of some intimate relationships, perhaps many intimate relationships. This book is not about the violence as much as it is a reflection on our responses to—or our lack of responses to—that violation of physical integrity and the accompanying emotional and mental trauma. As these next pages indicate, we all too often fail to recognize the signs of physical violence.

  • Women’s property and inheritance rights are recognised in international law and in a growing number of countries worldwide, yet women in many developing countries do not have the right to own or inherit property. At the same time, women are increasingly heading up households and are in critical need of land and property for economic security, particularly in the context of the AIDS epidemic - in fact, secure property rights are believed to be a factor in reducing women’s risk of contracting HIV and in protecting them from domestic violence....

  • On behalf of the Research Society on Alcoholism, I am pleased to introduce this thirteenth volume of Recent Developments in Alcoholism about alcohol and violence. Current concepts are presented in well-organized sections that focus on epidemiology, neurobiology, psychology, and family issues. It is becoming increasingly clear that age, gender, socioeconomic circumstances, and genetics affect aggressive behavior and vulnerability to alcoholism. This volume contains up-to-date discussions of these issues.

  • This edited collection is about football fan association and behaviour; more specifically, it is about football fan violence. It explores the interrelations of participatory and aggressive behaviour, social identity, and the politics of public order and control, within a football context. In contradistinction to Steve Redhead’s (1986) stretched claim, it is not the ‘final football book’ on fan violence or supporter culture generally. Rather, as its various contributors demonstrate, it is part of a series of academic texts exploring football fan culture and experience.

  • n the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), tens of thousands of girls and women have suffered horrific acts of sexual violence. The government army is one of the main perpetrators. Commanders, even when confronted with abuses, have frequently failed to stop sexual violence and may themselves be guilty of war crimes or crimes against humanity as a consequence. In this report, Human Rights Watch looks at sexual violence committed by the army and more specifically the 14th brigade whose case illustrates the failure to enforce respect for humanitarian law.
