Prohibitin-1 (PHB, also known as PHB1), a member of the Band-7 family of proteins, is highly conserved evolutionarily, widely expressed, and pres-ent in different cellular compartments. Genetic studies with different organ-ism models have provided strong evidence for an important biological role of PHB in mitochondrial function, cell proliferation, and development.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to target mRNAs in a sequence-specific manner. A large number of genes appear to be the target of miRNAs, and an essential role for miRNAs in the regulation of various conserved cell signaling cascades, such as mitogen-activated protein kinase, Notch and Hedgehog

The RNA folding trajectory features numerous off-pathway folding traps, which represent conformations that are often equally as stable as the native functional ones. Therefore, the conversion between these off-pathway struc-tures and the native correctly folded ones is the critical step in RNA fold-ing.

Although allostery plays a central role in driving protein–DNA interac-tions, the physical basis of such cooperative behavior remains poorly understood. In the present study, using isothermal titration calorimetry in conjunction with site-directed mutagenesis, we provide evidence that an intricate network of energetically-coupled residues within the basic regions of the Jun-Fos heterodimeric transcription factor accounts for its allosteric binding to DNA.
