  • This book describes the principles of image and video compression techniques and introduces current and popular compression standards, such as the MPEG series. Derivations of relevant compression algorithms are developed in an easy-to-follow fashion. Numerous examples are provided in each chapter to illustrate the concepts. The book includes complementary software written in MATLAB SIMULINK to give readers hands-on experience in using and applying various video compression methods. Readers can enhance the software by including their own algorithms....

  • Over the last two decades, we have witnessed an explosive growth in both the diversity of techniques and the range of applications of image processing. However, the area of color image processing is still sporadically covered, despite having become commonplace, with consumers choosing the convenience of color imaging over traditional grayscale imaging.

  • In this chapter, the JPEG standard is introduced. This standard allows for lossy and lossless encoding of still images and four distinct modes of operation are supported: sequential DCT-based mode, progressive DCT-based mode, lossless mode and hierarchical mode. 7.1 INTRODUCTION Still image coding is an important application of data compression. When an analog image or picture is digitized, each pixel is represented by a fixed number of bits, which correspond to a certain number of gray levels.

  • As introduced in the previous chapter, differential coding achieves high coding efficiency by utilizing the correlation between pixels existing in image frames. Transform coding (TC), the focus of this chapter, is another efficient coding scheme based on utilization of interpixel correlation. As we will see in Chapter 7, TC has become a fundamental technique recommended by the international still image coding standard, JPEG. Moreover, TC has been found to be efficient in coding prediction error in motion-compensated predictive coding.

  • Until recently, surgical resection was considered the only option for treatment of kidney cancer, especially renal cell carcinoma. The disease is relatively resistant to both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and although alternative systemic therapies such as interleukin- 2 immunotherapy and interferon have shown promise, objective response rates are still quite low. Minimally invasive therapies have piqued the interest of researchers by showing significant improvements in treatment and management of kidney cancer.

  • Despite worldwide efforts to assess and control cardiovascular risk factors, cardiac diseases and in particular coronary artery disease (CAD) are still the foremost causes of death in the developed countries of Western Europe, North America and Asia and are becoming increasingly common in Eastern Europe and the developing world (Deanfield 2001). Approximately one in five deaths is currently related to cardiac disease in Europe and the US. Nearly 500,000 deaths caused by CAD are reported every year in the US, over 600,000 in Europe, 170,000 of these in Germany alone.

  • The field of color imaging deals with the capture, processing, communication, and reproduction of color images. The origins of color imaging can be traced back to prehistoric times when cave dwellers created the first color drawings depicting events in their lives, using primitive materials and techniques available to them. Since then, color images have played an important role in history, and color imaging has advanced hand in hand with progress in science and technology. In the past 10 to 15 years, this field, like many others, has been significantly transformed by the digital revolution.

  • Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has widened the horizons of radiation therapy due to its ability to conformradiation dose distributions to complex tumor target volumes while sparing nearby critical structures as much as physically possible. IMRT has also led to paradigm shifts in all elements of the chain of radiotherapy, from treatment prescription over treatment planning (“inverse” planning) to treatment delivery and verification.

  • This book is concerned with the computational processing of 3D faces, with applications in human computer interaction. It is a discriplinary research area overlapping with computer vision, computer graphics, machine learning and HCI. Within the last 10 years, fast increase in performance of memory, display and processor speed has allowed the expansion of Computer Graphics. It has now overcome Image Processing in its achievement. In the 3D face field, the CG-generated faces are almost indiscernible from real faces. Still it requires manual drawing for each image and artistic skills.

  • Both the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standardisation bodies have been releasing recommendations for universal image and video coding algorithms since 1985. The first image coding standard, namely JPEG (Joint Picture Experts Group), was released by ISO in 1989 and later by ITU-T as a recommendation for still image compression. In December 1991, ISO released the first draft of a video coding standard, namely MPEG-1, for audiovisual storage on CD-ROM at 1.5—2 Mbit/s....

Still, Photoshop can be a scary thing (especially that first purchase price!), comprising a jungle of menus and panels and tools and options and shortcuts as well as a bewildering array of add-ons and plug-ins. And that’s why you’re holding this book in your hands. And why I wrote it. And why Wiley published it.

  • There are several reasons that may explain why the prevalence of heart failure is increasing: ageing of the population, the success in prolonging survival in coronary patients, and the success in postponing coronary events by effective prevention in those patients at high risk or those patients who have already survived a first event (secondary prevention) (Senni et al, 1999). Advances in medical therapy have resulted in improved survival in patients with moderate and severe heart failure, but the prognosis for end-stage heart failure patients still remains poor.

  • A coffeepot that was connected to the Internet (before it was even called the Internet) and which provided information about its status (long before there was Twitter). In 1991, researchers at Cambridge University shared a single coffeepot among several floors. The researchers were frustrated by the fact that they would often climb several flights of stairs, only to find the coffeepot empty. They set up a videocamera that broadcast a still image to their desktops about three times per minute — enough to determine the level of coffee in the glass pot.
