Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions. (1.0 pt.) Parents whose children show a special interest in a particular sport have a difficult decision about their children's careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top sportsmen and women? For many children it means starting very young and school work, going out with friends and other interests have to take second place. It's very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train for five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing. Another problem is, of course, money. In many countries money for training is available from the government for the very best young sportsmen and women. If this help cannot be given it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child's development and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, and etc. can all be very expensive. Many parents are understandably worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional trainers; however, believe that it is only by starting young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. What is clear is that very few people do reach the top and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training. 1. This is from _________. A. a letter B. an advertisement C. a sports diary D. a newspaper article 2. What is the writer's intention? A. To inform us about training. B. To discuss training method. C. To give details about training costs. D. To suggest a training program. 3. How do some governments help young children who are good at sport? A. They give them overseas training. B. They give them good positions in the government. C. They give them money for training. D. They give them sports clothes and special equipment. 4. According to the passage _________. A. one can only become a top sportsperson by starting young and all parents are willing to spend their money and time on the training B. one can only become a top sportsperson by starting young but it is very expensive C. one will have a lot of friends and money when one starts young to train to become a top sportsperson D. early training helps to develop young muscles without ever damaging them 5. Today I'd like to begin a discussion on the problem of the heating up the earth. First we'll touch on the relationship between fluorocarbons and the ozone layer. You probably remember that the ozone layer is the protective shield around the earth. It is important to all life, because it filters out harmful ultraviolet light from the sun. Ozone itself, a form of oxygen, is regularly destroyed by natural chemical processes. The problem now is that too much of the ozone layer is being destroyed. Scientists suspect that certain chemicals, such as fluorocarbons, are contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer. And how do we use fluorocarbons? The most common uses are in spray cans and cooling systems. The chemical pollution from theses fuorocrabons can account for some of the ozone losses that have been reported. There are, however, new studies linking the sun itself to the depletion of the ozone layer. We'll go into that new study more next time. 1. Who is the most likely speaker? A. A mechanic B. YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Yosemite National Park became America's first state park in 1864. Compared to other protected areas, Yosemite Valley is quite small, about seven miles long and a mile wide, small enough anyway for John Muir, the conservationist and founder of Sierra Club, to explore the entire area on foot. But within its narrow confines are some of the most impressive cliffs, valleys, meadows, waterfalls, and flora and fauna. The park ranges from 2,000 feet above sea level to more than 13,000 feet. Among its most famous peaks are EI Capitan, the largest piece of exposed granite in the world, and Half Dome. Some of the most spectacular waterfalls, such as the Bridal Veil Falls, are only a short hike from the Yosemite Valley floor. The view of the Valley floor from the top of 3,200 foot Glacier Point, 32 miles away by road, is considered by many to be the most impressive of all. When you are not feeling "stoned" by the sheer cliffs that circle the valley, be aware of the black bears that no longer appear to fear humans and have known to brazenly walk into campsites and raid food. Coyotes and other denizens of the forests are more cunning and less visible. There are 196 miles of paved roads within the park and 840 miles of trails. Since it also has 8 miles of paved bike path, rent a bike and explore the relatively flat valley floor. To prevent congestion and overcrowding, there have been proposals to ban automobiles in Yosemite, especially during the very busy and crowded holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. But don't let a trifle like that stop you from visiting one of the most fabulous natural wonders of the world. 1.
