Medical Image Processing

1.1. MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING/
ANALYSIS?
- Different medical imaging modalities provide
specified information of body’s organs or tissue
structures
- Contrast and visibility of medical image depend on
imaging modality, on response function as well as
pathological regions

Example:
- Examine fractures at rib cage → need to clearly
observe hard, bone structure → X-ray radiography
- Examine whether there is a sign of breast cancer or
not → clearly observe calcification, abnormal
masses and soft, breast tissue → breast X-ray
radiography or mammography

1.2. MEDICAL IMAGING MODALITIES
- Objective of medical imaging: capture useful
information on physiological processes or body’s
organs by energy sources
- Catergorization
• Inside energy source
• Outside energy source
• Combination of inside and outside energy
sources
