MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING
PATTERN CLASSIFICATION &
DIAGNOSTIC DECISION
CHAPTER 7
MEDICAL IMAGE PROCESSING
- The final purpose of biomedical image analysis is to
classify a given image or the features that have been
detected in the image, into one of a few known
categories
- In medical applications, a further goal is to arrive at a
diagnostic decision regarding the condition of the patient
- Medical images are not the only necessary information
to diagnose pattern classification will aid diagnostic
process

- Example: detect breast cancer
+ Is a mass or tumor present?
If yes, mark its location. Compare its density to that of
surrounding tissues. Describe its shape, edge, texture. Is
it a benign, cyst (solid or fluid-filled) or malignant
+ Are calcifications present?
If yes, estimate number/cm2. Describe their shape,
spatial distribution, density
+ Are there signs of architectural distortion?
+ Are there signs of bilateral asymmetry?
+ Are there major changes compared to the previous
mammogram?
+ Is the case normal?
