tosuittheresearchobject,isusedasthemainresearchtool.Eightlecturersandeighty-four
third-yearstudentsmajoringinEnglishatHanoiOpenUniversityparticipatedinthestudy,
andtwoteacherswereinvitedtoparticipateininterviewstoclarifysomeinformation.Thedata
collectedrevealedthatmostsurveyedlecturersandstudentshighlyappreciatedthediversityof
topics,theirinterestinreadingcomprehension,andtheclarityofinstructionsfortheexercises
inthetextbookActiveSkillsforReading4.However,thecriteriaforthediversityofquestion
types,quantityandvarietyofvocabulary,andwayofintroducingvocabularyarenothighly
appreciated.Based on thendings, the interviewed lecturers madesome recommendations
onhowtousethistextbookmoreeectively.Thestudyhashelpfultheoreticalandpractical
contributionstotextbookselection,evaluation,andeectiveuseoftextbooks.
