  • Salinity stress negatively impacts agricultural yield throughout the world affecting production whether it is for subsistence or economic gain. The plant response to salinity consists of numerous processes that must function in coordination to alleviate both cellular hyperosmolarity and ion disequilibrium. In addition, crop plants must be capable of satisfactory biomass production in a saline environment (yield stability).

  • Mechanisms of salt tolerance in halophytes: can crop plants resistance to salinity be improved? High concentrations of sodium are toxic to most plant species, making soil salinity a major abiotic stress in plant productivity world wide. Many crop species, which countless people rely for survival, are negatively affected.

  • Abstract: The impact of salinity on three arboreal mangrove plants, Sonneratia apetala (Sa), S. caseolaris (Sc) and Rhizophora stylosa (Rs), was studied. The three mangrove species were treated with different salinity levels over a three-month period. The response and adaptation of these three mangrove species to salinity were shown to be different. Net photosynthesis rate, stomata conductance and transpiration rate of leaves decreased and soluble sugar content in leaves increased, with salt concentration in all three mangrove species.

  • Abstract Physiological and biochemical responses induced by salt stress were studied in laboratory-grown young plants of the mangrove, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The growth rates and leaf areas were highest in the culture with 125 mM NaCl. Transpiration rates showed a diel periodicity when the plants were placed in water, but the oscillatory cycles disappeared for plants placed in higher

  •  In the present work we have extended these experiments by the use of the plate count in an effort to throw more light on the mechbanism of the salt action. Since our previous experiments have shown that the salt effect is magnified on the acid side of the region of optimum growth (Sherman and Holm, 1922), we have used in the present work media adjusted to a reaction of pH 5.4. All of the counts here reported represent the average of triplicate plates on extract-pepton agar incubated for three days at 33°C. Further details of the experiments are given in the appendix.

  • Potassium permanganate absorbed on copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate oxidizes aniline into azobenzene under heterogenous conditions. Azoxybenzene is a minor by-product. Under solventless reaction conditions, the oxidation does not take place owing to predominant complex formation between copper(II) and aniline. The influence of the nature of the solvent as well as the replacement of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate by several other inorganic salt hydrates on the potassium permanganate promoted oxidation of aniline is described.

  • Salt and Light became a book many years after Eberhard Arnold’s death. Its chapters were compiled and translated by members of the Bruderhof communities from articles, talks, and lectures from the years 1915–1935. Arnold grappled with the Sermon on the Mount his whole adult life. His relentless faithfulness to its demands bore practical fruit in a community movement that is still thriving today. Although Arnold was addressing a Germany in political and social ferment, his words are not bound to time and place. They direct us out of our bankruptcy to a new, revolutionary way. ....

  • Populations in developing countries are growing so quickly that the land and water are unable to sustain them. In most developing countries, prime farmland and fresh water are already fully utilized. Although irrigation can be employed to bring land in arid areas into production, it often leads to salinization. In some countries, the amount of newly irrigated land is equalled by salinized irrigated land going out of production. Moreover, irrigation water is often drawn from river basins or aquifers shared by several countries, and friction over its use is common....
