Dissertation of forestry - Summary "The role of social capital and local institutions in community forest management in the north central region of Vietnam" assess the role of social capital and local institutions in the community forest management of the North Central region in order to offer a scientific and practical basis for enhancing the effectiveness of community forest management in the region and throughout Vietnam.

The study focuses mainly on the investigation of alterations in the students’ autonomy after a period taking part in the English club organized by the Advanced - Education Program - Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry.

Objectives: The objective of the thesis is to analyze the relationship between agricultural and forestry production and the use of basic natural resources in the concentrated area of Thai ethnic people in Son La province in terms of a socio-economic perspective. Since then, orienting to build some effective agricultural and forest production models and proposing solutions to develop agriculture and forestry towards sustainable use of natural resources.

The thesis aims to: Classify landscape ecology system and establish maps of landscape ecology in Son La province. Clarify the changes of landscape ecology in Son La over time (from 2005 to 2015). Identify the scientific foundations based on studing landscape ecology to orientate rational territory use in agriculture, forestry and conservation.

Forestry provides two types of long term benefits:- Wood benefits; timber, poles, thinnings Non-Wood benefits; environmental protection, wildlife habitat, land restoration, recreational environment. Both these benefits can span a lifetime of over 50 years.

This report summaries major achievements of the CARD project entitled “Improvement of operator skills and technology in small rural sawmills in Vietnam”. An extensive survey of the needs of the rural sawmilling industry has identified the current and future prospects for forest industries in Vietnam. It highlights the very significant importance of this industry to the economy of Vietnam and future well being of rural populations.

The study provides a comprehensive picture of the animal feed sector in Vietnam (both supply and demand side) upon data collected from 2 main surveys: feed mill survey investigating the supply side and producer survey investigating the demand side. The results show that, on the supply side, SMEs appear to have less competitiveness than large ones. That is reflected in some aspects such as higher production costs per kg output, using more labor, limited quality control, limited access to capital and land, and many small enterprises have losses. Detailed assessment of impacts of more than 50 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in 11 provinces through which over 2,000 farmers were trained from 2005 to 2006 has shown many beneficial effects. In recent years Vietnam’s forest coverage has undergone rapid expansion, with a marked increase in plantings of exotic species of Eucalyptus, Acacia and Pinus. This expansion provides excellent opportunities for new international export markets for timber products. However it also represents new and increased risks from forestry pests and diseases, which in outbreak circumstances can have catastrophic consequences on plantation establishment and productivity. In order to overcome the limitation of land available for aquaculture in the central costal region of Vietnam and to reduce organic pollution in traditional integrated fish farming, a new method was developed called the ‘improved VAC’ In traditional VAC systems the manure from farm animals is released into fish ponds whereas in the ‘Improved VAC’ the manure is used for earthworm culture. The worm production is then used to feed high value fish species in tanks.

The objectives of the project are to expand plant quarantine activities in Vietnam through provision of facilities and equipment, and training to staff to standards required for participation in international trade.
