Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, chronic inflammatory disease that affects 0.5–1% of the population. RA causes progressive joint destruction that leads to the restriction of activities of daily living and deterioration of quality of life.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a multifactorial disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints. Both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the pathogenesis leading to joint destruction and ultimately dis-ability. In the inflamed RA joint the synovium is highly infiltrated by CD4 + T cells, B cells and macrophages, and the intimal lining becomes hyperplastic owing to the increased number of macrophage-like and fibro-blast-like synoviocytes.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic symmetric polyarticular joint dis-ease that primarily affects the small joints of the hands and feet. The inflammatory process is characterized by infiltration of inflammatory cells into the joints, leading to proliferation of synoviocytes and destruction of cartilage and bone.

Vitamin K2(menaquinone-4, MK-4) has been reported to induce apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma, leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome cell lines. The effects of MK-4 on the development of arthritis have never been addressed thus far. In the present study, we investigated the effect of MK-4 upon the proliferation of rheumatoid synovial cells and the development of arthritis in collagen-induced arthritis.
