Isolation of cellulase enzyme from water used in white pepper processing
Cellulase, an enzyme that helps soften fruit peel, is produced by plants during the fruit ripening phase. Utilizing the immersing water from the white pepper processing to extract cellulase will help minimizing environmental waste and retrieving valuable compounds. Some factors affecting the cellulase yield from the immersing water of pepper were studied, including the degree of ripeness of peppercorn, immersing temperature and time.

Master's thesis of Chemical Engineering: Investigating biological filtration for manganese control in lorne water supply system
The purpose of this research was to investigate the technological feasibility of biological filtration process for Mn control in Lorne WTP. This thesis consists of eight chapters. Project background and research objectives are described in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents an extensive literature review covering the nature of manganese, manganese analytical methods, manganese control methods, the nature of MOB and biological control of Mn in drinking water treatment. The materials and methods used throughout the experimental investigation for this study are described in Chapter 3. The results and discussion are presented in the following four chapters.

Schmutzdecke - A filtration layer of slow sand filter
Slow sand filtration has been an effective means of treating water for the control of microbiological contaminants. Schmutzdecke is the layer of the microbial community that is responsible for treating the water through the sand bed. As water passes through this biological layer, foreign particles are trapped and essentially eaten by bacteria forms on this layer. Development of Schmutzdecke layer depends on available microbes in raw water, food supply, oxygen supply, residence time, and wetting of sand bed. Generally, 13 types of bacterial community are found in the Schmutzdecke layer, in which Pseudomonas stutzeri bacteria are dominant.
