This thesis analyses the Australian resources equity market reaction to the 2010 resource tax announcements. These taxes were explicitly designed to meet tax neutrality conditions. Tax neutrality implies that taxes should not incur substitution effects that result in economic inefficiency. These taxes were intended to generate revenue (i.e., an income effect) while not distorting economic incentives.

In this thesis, using the data from the Viral Genome Resource at National Center for Biotechnology Informa-tion (NCBI), we propose the ROTA model that has been specifically estimated formodeling the evolution of rotavirus.

Influence of substitution of 3d metals for Mn on properties of La0.67Ca0.33Mn0.9 TM0.1O3 (TM = Fe, Co, Ni) compounds was studied. Ferromagnetic – paramagnetic and metals – insulator transitions were significantly affected by Mn-site substitution. However, no observable difference was found in their crystal structure from X-ray diffraction analysis. At room temperature the structure characterization of these compounds gave the single phase and structure is the distortion orthorhombic cell with space group symmetry Pnma. The magnetoresistance measurement showed that the magnetoresistance ratio MR increases until 17% in magnetic field of 0.4 T, and in low magnetic field region (µoH < 0.05 T), MR = 7.5% at 102 K. The investigations of EPR showed that the intensity of resonance line can be well fitted by the expression: I(T) = Ioexp(Ea/kB T).

Pentyl 2-(1H-indole-2-carboxamido)benzoate (5) is obtained in good yield as stable crystals by reaction of pentyl 2-amino benzoate (6) with indole-2-carbonyl chloride acid (7) in the presence of pyridine. The crystal structure of 5 confirms the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding (N-H…O) which produces a six-membered ring, and the molecules are linked together by intermolecular hydrogen forces (N-H…O).

Gaegurin 4 (GGN4), a 37-residue antimicrobial peptide, consists of two amphipathic ahelices (residues 2–10and 16–32) connected by a flexible loop region (residues 11– 15). As part of an effort to develop new peptide antibiotics with low molecular mass, the activities of C-terminally truncated GGN4 analogues were tested. D 24)37 GGN4, a peptide analogue with 14 residues truncated from the C-terminus of GGN4, showed a complete loss of anti-microbial activity.

A new human/rat CRH analogue has been synthesized using the Fmoc/tBu solid-phase synthetic protocol. The sequence ofthe new peptide differs from the original in two positions, 12 and 15, at which the native amino acids L-phenylalanine 12 and L-leucine 15 have been replaced by the nonprotein amino acids D-phenylalanine and a-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib), respectively. We purified pancreatic deoxyribonucleases I (DNases I) from three snakes, Elaphe quadrivirgata, Elaphe climaco-phoraandAgkistrodon blomhoffii, and cloned their cDNAs. Each mature snake DNase I protein comprised 262 amino acids. Wild-type snake DNases I with Leu130 were more thermally unstable than wild-type mammalian and avian DNases I with Ile130. After substitution of Leu130Ile, the thermal stabilities of the snake enzymes were higher than those of their wild-type counterparts and similar to mam-malian wild-type enzyme levels....

Various mutations in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene are responsible for hypophosphatasia characterized by defective bone and tooth mineralization; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely to be elucidated. Substitution of an arginine at position 433 with a histidine [TNSALP(R433H)] or a cysteine [TNSALP(R433C)] was reported in patients diagnosed with the mild or severe form of hypo-phosphatasia, respectively.

d-Crystallin is the major structural protein in avian and reptilian eye lenses, and confers special refractive properties. The protein is a homotetramer arranged as a dimer of dimers. In the present study, the roles of the side chains of Glu267, Lys315, and Glu327, which provide hydrogen bonds at the double dimer interface, were investigated. Hydrophobic side chain sub-stitution led to all mutant proteins having an unstable dimer interface.
