PREFACE
To the students
Listening 1 is to help you develop your listening ability in English, so that you
feel more confident about the listening you need in everyday life. The practice tasks
give you the opportunity to practise this day-to-day sort of listening (e.g. daily
communication, dialogue, short talks, lectures, news, documentaries etc.). They give
you help with the aspects of listening you might find difficult (e.g. choosing the right
word, linking ideas, listening for main points, taking notes, concentration, etc.).
There is also a lot of opportunity to develop and practise your reading and
speaking skills in this book. Listening 1 offers listening practice to help you
understand the main points of clear, standard speech about every day or job-related
topics. Situations include phone calls, meetings and interviews. Each lesson has a
preparation task, an audio recording and other different tasks to check your
understanding and to practise a variety of listening skills.
To the teachers
The aim of Listening 1 is to help students at B1 level to develop their listening
ability in English and to give them the confidence to use this ability in everyday
life. Students at this level usually want to and need to improve their listening skill and
become good listeners, but often meet a huge number of barriers that may prevent or
hinder listening. The reasons for this are many and varied, but in this book, we aim to
break down four major barriers to help students listen effectively. The first problem
with the listeners is that they are hearing everything from their own point of view. This
means that they often miss critical information simply because it does not fit with their
view of the world. The second is that the listeners sometimes make assumptions about
the speaker’s meaning or intention before the speaker has finished. The third barrier is
the self-protective listening. Here, the listener is so wrapped up in their own situation
and/or emotional response to it that they simply have no brain-space to hear or
concentrate on anything else. The fourth is the affirmative listening. It is more or less
the polar opposite of judgmental listening. The listeners only “hear” messages with
which they agree. They therefore only listen for points that they can support, and not
those that show different opinions. The book does not aim to teach items of vocabulary
or grammar, except where such items seem to be specific enough to the listening and
important enough to the successful completion of the tasks being set to warrant
special guidance and practice. There are many textbooks which do teach these
