One of the most concerning problems throughout the world is air pollution. Indoor air
pollution is considered the leading cause of lung cancer. Many people in developing
countries use open stoves for cooking and heating at home while they do not have proper
ventilations. The smoke is trapped inside the house where all family members live every
day. Outdoor pollution also leads to disease and illness in big cities such as Beijing, China.
China relies heavily on coal, which is seen as the major pollutant. According to the
European Union, only 1% of urban citizens in China can breathe clean air on an average
day. Nearby countries such as Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, etc. receive much of China's
pollution in the form of acid rain. The coal powered factories, which produce products for
North American and European consumers, are in charge of this pollution. Outdoor air
pollution is also a problem in developed countries, especially for those who live in urban
centres such as San Francisco or London. They may experience many warm days beneath a
layer of smog.
