Statue of Liberty: A Famous Gift On July 4, 1884 France gave the United States an amazing birthday gift: the Statue of Liberty! Without the base at the bottom, it is as tall as a 15-story building. She is a symbol of the United States. But the world-famous Statue of Liberty standing in New York Harbor was built in France. The statue was shown to the U.S., taken apart, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in crates, and rebuilt in the U.S. It was France’s gift to the American people. It all started at dinner one night near Paris in 1865. A group of Frenchmen were talking about their dictator and the democratic government of the U.S. They wanted to build a monument to support American freedom. Maybe then, France would have a democracy in their own country. At that dinner was the sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. He imagined a statue of a woman holding a torch burning with the light of freedom. It took 21 years for this idea to become a reality. French supporters raised money to build the statue, and Americans paid for the base it would stand on. Finally, in 1886, the statue was dedicated. Fun Facts * Engineer Gustave Eiffel, who would later design the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed Liberty’s “spine.” Inside the statue four huge iron columns support a metal framework that holds the thin copper skin. * The statue - 151 feet, 1 inch tall - was the tallest structure in the U.S. at that time. Do you know what the tallest structure in the U.S. is today? * The arm holding the torch measures 46 feet; the index finger, 8 feet; the nose, nearly 5 feet. That is a big nose! (Be careful, if it gets cold she may sneeze!) * Visitors climb 354 steps (22 stories) to look out from 25 windows in the crown. * Seven rays in the crown represent the Earth’s seven seas. 1. An essential part of our lives G. A new era for the Internet 0 F Less than two decades ago, a British scientist called Tim Berners Lee invented two abbreviations that we are very familiar with today: www and @. Even if we don’t use the Internet directly, it certainly influences our modern world to the extent that it is hard to imagine how we could exist without it. Now the next generation of computers is waiting in the wings. 1 ………………… Recently, ten laboratories run by governments in different parts of the world have become linked. Their computers have been connected so they can “talk” to each other. This may not seem very dramatic news, but it is the beginning of a development that will increase the power of the Internet tremendously. 2 ………………… The Internet is an interconnected system of networks that connects computers round the world and facilitates the transmission and exchange of information. The way that you use the Internet is by accessing this network. This depends on the power that your system allows you to use. The power of your computer is responsible for how fast you can download files, how much data you can store, etc. If your computer is old and slow, accessing the information can be very difficult. 3 ………………… The new development in information technology has been called “the grid”, and it will be a network of computers that are linked together. The “grid” will work in a different way from the Internet, enabling you to get the power of the biggest computers in the world on your computer. Accessing the information will no longer depend on the power of your computer. The idea is that while you access information, you will also have access to the power of the bigger computer stations. 4 ………………… One advantage of the revolutionary idea is that geographical location will become irrelevant. The “grid” will decide which are the best parts of a worldwide network to do the job you want. This means that you may be accessing a computer in Japan to show a problem in Alaska. 5 ………………… The “grid” can be compared to having an efficient personal assistant. You can give your assistant a task and it will be done for you. The assistant will do the preliminary research, collect the data, compare them and decide on the best course of action by accessing any of the computer centers in the grid that happen to have the relevant information. All you have to do is assign the task, sit back and wait. Your answers: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Page 3 of 6
