PREFACE
English for Tourism has been designed to meet the needs of learners who are preparing for, or
already working in, the tourism and hospitality industry. The book combines essential English
language skills with authentic materials and case studies from the global tourism sector, helping
learners to communicate effectively in a variety of professional situations. The course provides
a balanced approach to developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with a strong
emphasis on practical communication. Topics have been carefully selected to reflect real-world
tourism contexts, including travel agencies, hotels, cultural heritage sites, transport, and
marketing. Each unit contains vocabulary development, grammar practice, and tasks that
encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. Special attention is given to cultural
awareness and professional etiquette, enabling learners to interact confidently with clients,
colleagues, and partners from diverse backgrounds. Authentic texts, interviews, and industry-
based scenarios ensure that students are exposed to realistic language use. Whether used in the
classroom or for self-study, English for International Tourism aims to build the linguistic
competence and intercultural skills necessary for success in the tourism industry. It is our hope
that this book will inspire learners not only to improve their English but also to develop a
deeper understanding of tourism as a dynamic and rewarding field.

THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
Tourism is one of the world's biggest industries, and the World Tourism Organization (WTO)
expects it to continue growing by four percent a year.
Most tourism in the world is domestic tourism – people travelling in their own country. It
represents about 80 percent of all tourist trips today.
Germany, the USA and China are the countries that spend the most on outbound tourism all
over the world. Other top spenders are the UK, France and Canada. People travel for many
reasons. Some inbound tourists travel for leisure, recreation and holidays. Other people are
visiting friends and relatives (VFR) or travelling for health and religious reasons. Others
travel for business and professional purposes.
