  7. ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC IN MECHANICS II. MAIN TEXT 1. Grammar: Passive voice: Form: Subject (S) + Verb ( V) + Object ( O) S + Be + V_ed ( past participle) + (by….) a. The passive of an active tense is formed by putting the verb to be into the same tense as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb. The subject of the active verb becomes the ‘agent’ of the passive verb. The ‘agent’ is very often not mentioned. When it is mentioned it is preceded by by and placed at the end of the clause: This metal of plate was welded by my father. b. Present and past tenses: S + V + O S + is / are + V_ ed Active: We build this bridge. Passive: This bridge is built. S + V ( past simple) + O S + was / were + V_ ed Active: They broke the window. Passive: The window was broken. c. The passive of continuous tenses requires the present continuous form of to be: S + is / am / are + V_ing + O S + is / are + being + V_ed ( past participle) Active: they are repairing the bridge. Passive: The bridge is being repaired. Page 7
  8. ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC IN MECHANICS d. Auxiliary + infinitive combinations are made passive by using a passive infinitive: S + should / can +V + O S + should / can + be + V_ed ( past participle) Active: You should shut these doors Passive: These doors should be shut Active: You can use the process to deposit metal to form a surface with alternative properties. Passive: The process can also be used to deposit metal to form a surface with alternative properties. 2. Reading Text Hand Grinder Hand grinders are being used more frequently in various industries, typically fabrication, mechanical, contracting, masonry, and welding, and if you don't use the tool properly, it can and will cause you or someone around you injury. By following the basic tips that will be outlayed below, you should be able to successfully use a hand grinder without complications and accidental injury. Just remember to be very careful, and to make sure that no matter what you're using the hand grinder for- cutting, grinding, or polishing- that you are careful. Safety should always be first and foremost on the priority list. Accidents can happen, and you can prevent the accidents by maximizing your safety. To ensure safety and minimize your risk of getting hurt or hurting someone else, make sure that you know the grinder and the parts to it. Each part has its own safety tips that you should follow. Page 8

PRACTICE 1. Answer The Questions Read the text above carefully and answer the following questions: a. What are Hand grinders being used for? b. What do you have to do first when you use the hand grinder for- cutting, grinding, or polishing? 2. Reading Comprehension Page 9
  10. ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC IN MECHANICS User Safety Operating a Hand Grinder You want to make sure that you are wearing proper gloves, safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, dust mask, and any other appropriate gear to prevent abrasive materials from flying off and causing injury. The dust mask is important, especially if you have allergies or asthma. Do not wear loose fitted clothes or jewelry, and if you have long hair, keep it away from moving parts of the grinder. Don't reach too far. If you can't fully reach what you're trying to get to, you want to move or reposition yourself. You want to make sure that you always have proper footing and balance. Make sure that you are to the side of the grinder opposite of the wheel and wheel guard, and have all others and bystanders at a safe distance from the work area. Keep a firm grip on the grinder and make sure that you are ready to resist any kickback.  Only use accessories designed for the grinder that you're using. Never mix accessories.  Don't have the grinder running while you're carrying it. Shut it off if you have to move or reposition.  Make sure not to work in rain or wet conditions. When wet, you increase potential risk of electric shock.  Never use the power cord to pull or carry an unplugged tool. The power cord is used for one thing, and that is to supply power to the hand grinder. The safety tips may seem simple, but you won't believe what you may see when using a grinder. Some people just don't think, and you want to make sure that the user and everyone around is kept safe from small particles flying off the object, from any flying sparks, or anything else that may be associated with using the grinder. You can not expect all potential problems or accidents. So just try to be prepared as best as you can. Page 10

Examples: - What make is the TV? - It is Sony. - What make is the computer? - It is Compaq. - What make is the watch? - It is Swiss. 2. Main Text Metals are used for a variety of engineering purposes, depending on the properties of metal. Certain common metal have malleable ductible properties. If a metal is malleable it can be hammered or pressed into a new shape. Copper is good example of this. It is also ductible metal because it can be stretched into another shape. Lead also has these properties also it is less ductible than copper. Whereas copper is a good conductor of electricity and is frequently used for electrical conductor, lead is not. Lead can be used for the sheaths on the electrical cables. Lead, like copper and tin, will resist corrosion. Tin and wrought iron can be stretched and also have malleable properties. The former is corrosion resistant, but wrought iron easily corrodes. Wrought iron can be used for chains and crane hooks. Neither of these two metals is a good conductor of electricity. Cast iron is unlike the other metals because its shape can not be altered by any hammering, pressing or stretching and it is not corrision resistant. III. PRACTICE 1. Read main text above and answer the following questions a. What are properties of common metals? b. When a metal is hammered or pressed, what happens? c. What do people use copper for? d. What are the differences between cast iron and the other metals? Page 14

Grammar  Active voice of “to use” S + use something for something Example: I use depth gauge for measuring the depth of a hole S + use something to do something Example: I often use metal tape to measure the length of pipe  Passive voice of “to use” S + tobe + used for something Example: Extenal caliper is used for measuring external dimensions S + tobe + used to do something Example: Internal caliper is used to measure internal dimensions 2. Main Text a. How to use and read a vernier caliper An ordinary vernier caliper has jaws you can place around an object, and on the other side jaws made to fit inside an object. These secondary jaws are used for measuring the inside diameter of an object. Also, a stiff bar extends from the caliper as you open it that can be used to measure depth. b. The basic steps are as follows:  Preparation to take the measurement, loosen the locking screw and move the slider to check if the vernier scale works properly. Before measuring, do make sure the caliper reads 0 when fully closed. If the reading is not 0, adjust the caliper’s jaws until you get a 0 reading. If you can’t adjust the caliper, you will have to remember to add to subtract the correct offset from your final reading. Page 20
