PRACTICE EXAM 2
255
Questions 186 through 190 refer to the following e-mail
and menu.
From: Marilyn Cantarella
To: Jason Kaplan
Subject: Menu changes
Hello, Jason,
Our board of directors met last week to discuss
what changes we want to make in the menu for
our popular Dixie Grill restaurants. They were
of the opinion that we need to make our food
more appealing to those people looking for less
fat and fewer calories.
I agreed with their decision and they asked me
to develop some new food ideas that reflect this
decision. I came up with some recommenda-
tions, which they have reviewed, but before
acting on anything, they wanted to know what
you thought of them. They specifically want to
know how difficult it would be to incorporate
some of the new dishes and what we should
charge for them. You can see that I haven’t put
any prices on anything.
I think in the future more and more restaurants
will want to target people concerned with how
much fat and how many calories they are
consuming in their diet. Even fast food
restaurants are acting on this trend.
I have another question for you. Do you think
we should include a breakdown of all entrees in
terms of nutrition, including amount and kinds
of fat and calories, or do you think this be a
turnoff to many customers? We want people to
continue to think of us as friendly.
I look forward to getting your response.

From: Fredericka Hodges [fhodges@CAC.org]
To: tmann@yahoo.com
Subject: Arts Council Meeting
Hey, Terri,
I meant to mention to you at the last board
meeting that I think we should go ahead with
the art show you were going to talk about
Monday evening. Because the meeting ran so
late, we didn’t have time to talk about it. We
never seem to be able to finish our agenda.
I think it would be a fine thing for our
organization to have a group show of its
members’ art. Certainly we can get some good
press out of it, since publicity is one of our
main goals. And because there will be many
people’s works being shown, including your
own, we are guaranteed good attendance at the
show’s opening.
By the way, what do you think about the
newsletter? I see it as an important step in
getting the word out about our activities. We

could send it not just to members, but to our
mailing list. I think we have everyones e-mail
as well as home address.
Anyway, let me know what date you think
would work for the show. We will have a lot of
work to organize it. If you know of people who
you think would be willing to help out on the
show, let me know who they are and I will
contact them.
Best,
Freddi

Speaking
This section tests your skills for the TOEIC Speaking
Test. It includes 11 questions that measure different
aspects of your speaking ability. The test lasts approx-
imately 20 minutes.
For each type of question, you will be given spe-
cific directions, including the time allowed for prepa-
ration and speaking. It is to your advantage to say as
much as you can in the time allowed. It is also impor-
tant that you speak clearly and that you answer each
question according to the directions.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will read
aloud the text on the screen. You will have 45 seconds
to prepare. Then you will have 45 seconds to read the
text aloud. Use a stopwatch or clock to keep track of
your time.
PRACTICE EXAM 2
259
201. If you have never experienced the warm waters
of Puerto Rico, you should definitely plan a
visit to this magical tropical island where the
beaches are wide and the surf comforting. At
Palmas del Sol you will enjoy every amenity
under the sun, including a world-class golf
course, tennis courts, a spa, and more. Ride the
waves of the Caribbean or lie aimlessly on the
beach under your private shade tree. This
resort offers five different restaurants, each one
more inviting than the next. You will never
forget your stay with us, so come play with us!
202. Although the new city law has good intentions,
I do not believe it will benefit our fair
metropolis. Granting tax exemptions to entice
a business to relocate here might help
unemployment rates, but the rates in our
city—and our state, for that matter—are
already very low. What our city needs is to have
everyone pay a fair share of the tax burden.
Letting a large company pay less means that
regular citizens will have to pay more, by
comparison. Our city offers many benefits to a
company; there‘s no need to add corporate tax
breaks to this list.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will describe
the picture on your screen in as much detail as you
can. You will have 30 seconds to prepare your re-
sponse. Then you will have 45 seconds to speak about
the picture. Use a stopwatch or clock to keep track of
your time.
203. Describe the photo in as much detail as
possible.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will answer
three questions. For each question, begin responding
immediately after you hear a beep. No preparation
time is provided. You will have 15 seconds to respond
to questions 204 and 205, and 30 seconds to respond
to question 206.
Imagine that a German camera company is
doing a survey in the United States and you
agree to participate.
204. What kind of camera do you have?
205. How often do you use your camera?
206. Describe what you use your camera for.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will answer
three questions based on the information provided.
You will have 30 seconds to read the information be-
low. Then you will have 15 seconds to respond to
questions 207 and 208, and 30 seconds to respond to
question 209. Use a stopwatch or clock to keep track
of your time.
