ABSTRACT

of listed small and medium enterprise (SME) companies in Vietnam.

This thesis aims to evaluate factors affecting the performance of SME firms in the
ICT and logistics sectors. The core hypothesis is that the SME firm’s financial
performance is influenced by 5 factors, including size, management efficiency,
liquidity, leverage, and working capital. These factors in turn are reflected by selected
measures learned from previous studies. Data was collected from the firms' audited
annual reports published openly online, especially on Vietstock.vn. The data collected
was analyzed by regression models and descriptive statistics (i.e., maximum,
minimum, and standard deviation) using Excel, SPSS, and Stata. To examine the
relationship between financial performance in the ICT and logistics industries, I
employ a range of quantitative research techniques, such as correlation studies, to
investigate the connections between the financial performance indicators of companies
both inside and between industries. This will make it easier to determine how closely
ii
related factors like liquidity ratios, cash ratios, and market-based measurements are to
one another. The study employs a multiple linear regression model to examine factors
affecting SME firms’ financial performance. Specifically, the Fixed Effects Model
(FEM) was utilized to manage unobserved firm heterogeneity within industries and
calculate the influence of industry-level factors on firm performance. Alternatively, the
Random Effects Model (REM) was employed to accommodate stochastic fluctuations
in firm performance and ascertain the effects of factors at both the firm and industry
levels.
<The regression analysis shows that, depending on the sector, a factor may or may
not have statistical evidence showing its impact on financial performance. For the SME
firms in the ICT sector, both firm size, equity to assets (leverage factor), and payables
turnover (working capital factor) have a positive influence on the financial
performance, while other factors did not. For the SME firms in the logistics sector, firm
size and equity to assets (leverage factor) show a positive effect on the financial
performance.
