Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Peer pressure

Mary is walking to her maths lesson. She has got a test, but she feels all right. Suddenly, Dan, the coolest boy in the class, speaks to her, “Come on!” he says. “Forget maths. Let’s go into town!” Now Mary feels bad. She has to make a difficult decision. Should she go to maths because that is the right thing to do, or should she take the chance to be friends with the most popular person in the class?

If you have had an experience like this, don’t worry. It is called peer pressure and it happens to everybody. However, people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don’t want to do, but shy and anxious people often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them, or perhaps they are just curious about trying something new. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they really don’t want to do.

It is hard being the only one who says no and the question is – how do you do it? Firstly, you must decide what you believe in. If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn’t like is a bad idea then the answer is simple. Don’t do it. It is your decision, not anybody else’s. You don’t need to shout and scream, but you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, “No, thanks. I don’t want to do that.”

Of course, being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who will say no too. Choose your friends carefully. You want friends to support you when you are in trouble. You don’t want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren’t always the most trustworthy.

However, peer pressure is not completely negative. You can learn a lot from people of your own age. They can teach you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. And don’t forget you can tell them things too and that always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn’t about feeling depressed. It is about sharing experiences and having fun. Question 31: What does Dan suggest doing?

Generation Gap: Causes and Solutions

Parents have a common complaint that their children after a certain age tend to disrespect them. They look for more freedom and enjoy the company of their friends rather than staying at home. These all are the changes when the kids grow from teenagers to adulthood. This is the time when they want to be treated as big but the parents still consider them small. They want to take their own decisions but they can’t because parents are there to take any important decisions about their children. So these issues sometimes create a problem and this is when the generation gap comes in.

There are lots of activities which interest the kids more but parents are not willing with it. Instead of arguing with children and avoiding the discussion, it will be good that parents take a step forward and talk to their children.

Parents are the best friend of their children as they act as both good parents and friends. As parents have spent a large amount of their time with their kids, so it is necessary that parents understand what their children are saying and how it can affect their life. Any suggestions coming from parents can never be wrong, so teenagers should trust in them as they always want their children to progress in life.

Communication is the best way to bridge the gap and find a perfect solution. Parents should sit with their children and talk about their needs so that parents know their children’s expectations. Parents can also listen to their problems and look for a solution which is best for them. Parents mustn’t force them to do anything without interest but make them aware of their duties so that they do it willingly. As you are dealing with teenagers, you need to keep yourself in their situation and then think about it.

If parents feel that their children are disrespecting, they then tell that if their children want respect, they need to give it to other people too. This is a lifetime lesson which they need to learn as it is not limited to their home but also when they go out and work in any organization.

Children must understand their limitations. If they go beyond that, it will be difficult for them. It is the duty of the parents that they make their kids understand their limitation and define a boundary for

Page 5/6

them. This is done for the benefit of the children so that they know what is right and what is wrong for them.

SECTION III : READING ( 2.5 pts) Part 1 : Read the following passage and choose the correct answer A, B,C, or D to fill in each blank Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people's. In the same way, children learn all the other things they learn to do without being taught - to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle - compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not. If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job

Trang 2/4– Mã đề 101

D. By copying what other people do.

should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find the way to get the right answer. Let's end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know. Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one's life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?" Don't worry! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it. Question 21. What does the author think is the best way for children to learn things? A. By listening to explanations from skilled people. B. By making mistakes and having them corrected. C. By asking a great many questions. Question 22. Generally, friendship exists for three reasons: virtue; usefulness; or pleasure. When virtue is the reason, friendship exists for the sake of friendship; where both like each other and cherish each other for some creditable values in the other's personality. You know that you would even die to swear your friendship for that person. You also know that the other would make you live than die for him/her regardless of intelligence, handsomeness, utility or the capability of giving pleasure.

A friendship of the second kind is formed for the practical value of it. How useful so and so is to me? What can I benefit from him? Will he use his reputation and influence to fetch me a good job? Thus a person may maintain relationship for practical, professional, and political reasons. However, once we do away with the usefulness, the friendship eventually dies.

Mã đề 501 Page 1/2

Friendship of the third kind is formed essentially on account of the pleasure the relationship can give. He is a joker. The moment he enters, you forget all your worries. She is cute, intelligent and charming. The very notion that she is your friend makes you feel proud. The point rests here: How good is he/she in giving me pleasure physically, emotionally, mentally and materially?

C. kill D. escape B. ask for

B. The third C. The second D. Not mentioned

B. which B. keep B. at C. where C. use C. on C. enthusiastic D. when D. do D. about D. enthusiast

Now to the question: Which of the three is good? The second type is good, yet since basing on utility, it falls short of longevity and quality. The third type is good too, but how long one enjoys only pleasure in life? But the first type, virtue-based friendship is fantastic for this reason: it lasts till the end of this universe. Question 17. From paragraph 1, we can infer that _____________. A. There are two main motives for friendship. B. You have to die in order to prove your friendship. C. The generation gap refers to the difference in attitudes or behaviour between a younger generation and the older one. In my opinion, different attitudes towards life, different views about certain problems, and a lack of communication can cause a generation gap in most societies.

The first factor is that parents and children generally see things from different perspectives. Choosing a career is a good example for this. Many parents try to impose certain careers they favour on their children, based on their own perceptions. However, young people don't always understand their parents' points of views. Instead, they prefer to be free to make their own decisions on their future career.

Another factor lies in differences in musical tastes, fashion, and political views between young people and their parents. For example, having a pierced nose might be viewed asfashionable by some teens, but for many parents, it is considered to be an act of rebellion against social norms. Some parents may also find their children's behaviour unacceptable and disrespectful to traditional values.

The major factor causing the generation gap is the lack of communication between parents and their children. Parents tend to be dominant and not to trust their children to deal with crises. Also, they

4

keep talking too much about certain problems. That is the reason why young people seldom reveal their feelings to their parents. When facing problems, young people prefer to seek help from their classmates or friends.

The above mentioned factors could lead to a generation gap. In order to bridge the gap between the old generation and the younger one, mutual understanding is the vital key. The wisest solution would be for parents and their children to treat each other as friends.

21. How many causes of the generation gap are mentioned?

A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5

22. How do young people usually react when their parents impose career choices on them?

A. They want to make their own decisions.

B. They follow their parents'advice.

C. They try to understand their parents'goodwill.

D. They follow their parents' foot.

23. What do parents often think about nose piercing?

A.They think that it is acceptable.

B.They think that it is fashionable.

C. They think that it is against social norms. D.They think that it is suitable

24. What do young people often do when they face problems?

A.They share the problems with their parents. B.They ask their classmates or friends for help

C. They ask their parents for help. D. They ask their sister for help.
