The A- and B-type crystalline lattices define the distinct structures reported in cereal and tuber starches, respectively. Amylopectin, the major fraction of starch, is thought to be chiefly responsible for this semicrystalline organization while amylose is generally considered as an amorphous polymer with little or no impact on the overall crystalline organization. The divalent metal transporter (DMT1) is a 12-transmem-brane domain protein responsible for dietary iron uptake in the duodenum and iron acquisition from transferrin in peripheral tissues. The transmembrane domain 4 (TM4) of DMT1 has been shown to be crucial for its biological function. Here we report the 3D structure and topology of the DMT1-TM4 peptide by NMR spectroscopy with simulated annealing calculations in membrane-mimetic environments, e.g. 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and SDS micelles. Here we report the isolation of full-length cDNAs encoding putative TOP6 sub-units A and B from rice (Oryza sativassp.indica), preserving all the struc-tural domains conserved among archaebacterial TOP6 homologs and eukaryotic meiotic recombination factor SPO11.

In the crystal structure of barleya-amylase 1, oligosaccharide is thus bound to the ‘sugar tongs’ site.
