This project examines how the moving image can be used as a vehicle of memory, to express what is lost, what is gained and what changes occur in relation to personal family migratory history—a messy and ambiguous process. This practice-led research project investigates video work, using filmed materials and objects, to focus attention on the non-linear aspect of time as it is subjected to individual and collective memories. The outcomes highlight the sometimes disconnecting and unpredictable experiences of migration, storytelling, and memory.

This research project investigates the influence of decoration and decorating on a fashion design practice, exploring the transformative effects of both in relation to surface and structure. Decoration is considered an after-effect, an element that can be differentiated from the object it adheres to, sometimes making it superfluous to the object’s function. In this project I consider decoration as having its own function – the ability, through its link to the ‘exterior’ world, to transform the shape, appearance and materials of forms by modifying their façade.

The thesis is a hermeneutic study: it wants to interpret ugliness in fashion. In exposing the mechanics of fashion, in revealing the seams as it were of those traditional drivers of fashion – beauty and glamour – we see the destruction of the illusion of fashion and an unknotting of many of the certainties around how and why we dress the way we do. Thus dressing poor represents a willful instability in its relationship to beauty and offers an alternative way to think through the history of fashion.

Thesis for the degree of Master of Fine Art: Adjacencies and Distances: Sculptural site intervention
This research is located spatially and conceptually within site-specific arts practice. There is a rich history here that began with the awakening of artists and institutions in the 1960s to the importance of the conditions of site (Kraus 1977). Here, the critical relationship between artist and their subject spaces set a challenge to how we engage with the environments in which we work and live.

This thesis is intended to give a sustained insight into the creative output, aims and motivations of Karl Lagerfeld, the contemporary French fashion designer. This investigation and cultural and artistic analysis will, of necessity, traverse many areas of inquiry and will tend to freely cross traditional and academic boundaries of thought and ideas. This is considered not only desirable, but essential, to give fuller credence to the various phenomena of the Lagerfeld empire.

The objective of the project was to portray memories of the Millennium Drought period through the development of artworks and this was initially undertaken with a photoshoot in January 2014. The project marries fine art methodologies with digital media and contributes to contemporary art practices that re-imagine the ways that weather can impact the environment and inhabitants living on the land. The artworks created are overall a documentation of my stories and memories from North East Victoria.
