Aerosolized secretions

Serological Survey of measles virus among children 0 – 12 years of age was carried out in some States in North Western Nigeria. A total of 450 blood samples were collected and analyzed for measles virus IgM and IgG using commercial Elisa kit Obtained from Diagnostic Automation/ Cortez Diagnostics, California, the results was interpreted according to the manufacturer’s instruction.

Molecular characterization of measles virus among children in parts of north western Nigeria, out of 30 samples analysed for PCR with specific primers, 21 samples confirmed presence of measles virus infection. Genotype B3 strain was confirmed in four (4) samples selected from different location within the state in Northern Western Nigeria. Sokoto, Jigwa and Kaduna States, Ten (10) IgM positive samples from each States were randomly selected and subjected to RT PCR, out of the ten (10) IgM positive samples from each state.

Sputum Cytology: Sputum specimen can be obtained from the patient either spontaneously or by aerosol – induced method. Morning specimen resulting from overnight accumulation of secretion yields best results. Three to five consecutive days’ sputum samples should be examined to ensure maximum diagnostic accuracy. Fresh unfixed specimens are better than prefixed specimens in 70% ethyl alcohol or coating fixative such as carbowax or saccomano fixative.
