Ebook "Genome mapping and genomics in arthropods" provides comprehensive and up-to-date reviews on genomic research on a large variety of selected animal systems, contributed by leading scientists from around the world. Insects and other arthropods, the largest group of animals in number of species, have global impact on agriculture, industry, human health and environment. They are of particular economic importance for food production as pollinators, for natural products like silk and also as pests and parasites.

Efficacy of combining varietal resistance with organic fertilizer application in reducing infestation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) by insect pests was studied during the early cropping season of 2013 at the Teaching and Research Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The present study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of combining varietal resistance with organic fertilizer application on infestation of cucumber by insect pests.

The agricultural pest Ceratitis capitata, also known as the Mediterranean fruit fly or Medfly, is a fruit crop pest of very high economic relevance in different continents. The strategy to separate Ceratitis males from females (sexing) in mass rearing facilities is a useful step before the sterilization and release of male-only flies in Sterile Insect Technique control programs (SIT).

The highly invasive agricultural insect pest Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the most thoroughly studied tephritid fruit fly at the genetic and molecular levels. It has become a model for the analysis of fruit fly invasions and for the development of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programmes based on the environmentally-friendly Sterile Insect Technique (SIT).

After dragon fruits, rambutan, lychee and longan, Vietnamese star apple was officially imported into USA market. Star apples are commonly grown and exclusively exported from Vietnam. Therefore, it has many competitive advantages in the international market. After harvest, star apples normally are infested insect pests and harmful microorganisms that can spread and damage the agricultural production.

The results showed that the sugar beet plants were harbored three main insect species i.e. Cassida vittata)Vill); Pegomyia mixta Vill and Scrobipalpa ocellatella Boyd. Four predatory species were associated with the three insect pests i.e. Coccinella undecimpunctata L.; Scymnus sp., Paederus alfierii Koch. and Chrysoperla carnea (Steph.).

The cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis is main pest on several economic crops. The producer used intensity chemical pesticide to decrease their population that lead to appear new generations overcomes it. The present search is targeted to suggest other components from natural sources which more safety to ecosystem and had ability to reduce the insect prohibition.

Efficient post-harvest handling storage can tremendously contribute to socio-economic empowerment in developing nations. Farmers use traditional storage containers for storing food grains for their own need. These storage structures are comparatively cheap, eco-friendly and impart high shelf life to the stored commodities. These traditional storage systems could be applied in modern storage areas with minor modification, could save food commodities that would be damaged by insects.

Temperature and grain moisture content are the main factors affecting grain spoilage in storage. These factors have a significant impact on the maintenance of quality, insect, fungus, and pest development. The main objective of this study was to determine the CO2 concentration and respiration rate of hulled einkorn wheat in different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) and grain moisture contents (9.1%, 11.5%, 13.8%, and 15.9%, wet basis) by means of CO2 sensors.

Parasitoid wasps are well-known natural enemies of major agricultural pests and arthropod borne diseases. The parasitoid wasp Macrocentrus cingulum (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) has been widely used to control the notorious insect pests Ostrinia furnacalis (Asian Corn Borer) and O. nubilalis (European corn borer). One striking phenomenon exhibited by M. cingulum is polyembryony, the formation of multiple genetically identical offspring from a single zygote. Moreover, M.

Sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci MED/Q and MEAM1/B, are two economically important invasive species that cause considerable damages to agriculture crops through direct feeding and indirect vectoring of plant pathogens. Recently, a draft genome of B. tabaci MED/Q has been assembled. In this study, we focus on the genomic comparison between MED/Q and MEAM1/B, with a special interest in MED/Q’s genomic signatures that may contribute to the highly invasive nature of this emerging insect pest.

The degree to which adaptation to same environment is determined by similar molecular mechanisms, is a topic of broad interest in evolutionary biology, as an indicator of evolutionary predictability. We wished to address if adaptation to the same host plant in phytophagous insects involved related gene expression patterns.

Agricultural insects are one of the major threats to crop yield. It is a known fact that pesticide application is an extensive approach to eliminate insect pests, and has severe adverse effects on environment and ecosystem; however, there is lack of knowledge whether it could influence the physiology and metabolic processes in plants.
