Children with nephrotic syndrome are at increased risk of infections, including bacterial peritonitis, pneumonia, and cellulitis. However, bacterial meningitis, a potentially life-threatening complication, has not been highlighted as an infectious complication of nephrotic syndrome in recent reviews.

The presentation was consistent with a diagnosis of A. cantonensis eosinophilic meningitis. The patient recovered fully after administering albendazole (800 mg/day for 2 weeks), and intravenous dexamethasone (0.6 mg/kg/day every 8 hours) and mannitol (1.5 g/kg/day every 8 hours) for the first 3 days, followed by 5 days of oral prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day).

A 2-year prospective study was carried out on 110 children with clinical suspicion of meningitis where C-reactive protein (CRP) determination and routine cytochemical and microbiological analysis of Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were done for all patients. The patients were divided into four groups: Pyogenic meningitis (PM), viral meningitis (VM), tubercular meningitis (TBM) and control groups.

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most devastating complication of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Diagnosis of TBM is challenging in young children due to the paucibacillary nature of disease. Microscopy for acid-fast bacilli in CSF is fast but has very low sensitivity whereas culture may take up to 42 days. Due to the urgency of diagnosis in suspected TBM cases, a rapid, accurate diagnostic test could have a great impact on survival.

Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency, and immediate diagnostic steps must be taken to establish the specific cause. Recurrence of bacterial meningitis in children is not only potentially life-threatening, but also involves or induces psychological trauma to the patients through repeated hospitalization with many invasive investigations.

Bacterial meningitis is a paediatric emergency with high mortality and morbidity requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. Clinically, it is often difficult to differentiate between bacterial and non-bacterial meningitis. Several studies have demonstrated the raised values of serum procalcitonin (PCT) in bacterial infections including meningitis but without definite cut-off guidelines.

Immunization coverage has been regarded an one of the parameters for measuring the effe ctiveness of the health programme of organization to the plight of the displaced persons, particularly, children. It could be observed from the table (Table 2) that immunization coverage was substantial for meningitis (34.72%) followed by measles (20.65). Lafia town is naturally both humid and hot and so, the relatively high level of immunization with cerebrospinal meningitis antigen is a justifiable preventive action by the state government.

Other Syndromes Local extension causing empyema is very uncommon, and—as might be inferred from the low rate of bacteremia—metastatic complications of M. catarrhalis pneumonia, such as septic arthritis, are exceedingly rare. As of 1995, 58 cases of bacteremic infection due to M. catarrhalis had been reported, mainly in children 60 years old; most of these patients had severe underlying lung disease and/or were immunocompromised. The syndromes reported have included bacteremia with no apparent focus, pneumonia, endocarditis, and meningitis.

Complications Patients with meningococcal meningitis may develop cranial nerve palsies, cortical venous thrombophlebitis, and cerebral edema. Children may develop subdural effusions. Permanent sequelae can include mental retardation, deafness, and hemiparesis. The major long-term morbidity of fulminant meningococcemia is the loss of skin, limbs, or digits that results from ischemic necrosis and infarction. Diagnosis Few clinical clues help the physician distinguish the patient with early meningococcal disease from patients with other acute systemic infections. ...
