Mangrove ecosystems provide a wide range of both direct and indirect use values to coastal communities in developing countries. The full value of mangrove products and services is not yet recognized and is therefore often ignored in development planning. As a result, decisions are made which favour commercial developments over mangrove conservation. The direct use value for U Minh Ha mangrove forest is not well understood but is considered to be high and important to about 80% of the local people in the area.

In the study of hydrobiology of water basins, a separate study of higher plants is required. Higher plants growing in water for aquatic organisms remain not only a habitat, a nutrient, a source of oxygen, but they are also important in the course of many biological processes in this environment. The vegetation of aquatic and coastal aquatic plants weakens the rate of flow of water, impedes the movement of silt and mineral particles, has antierosion significance and is used to strengthen the banks of water bodies.

This assumption has long influenced interpretations of human evolution in the humid tropics 1 4. It presumed that the first Americans would not have been broad spectrum foragers but instead big game hunters following herds from the Siberian steppes into similar American habitats 8.Only after those megafauna went extinct at the end of the Ice Age were people hypothesized to have developed agriculture in the dry, open vegetation valleys of the Central Andes and Mesoamerica, before finally migrating into the tropical forests and coastal lowlands.

The compensation (salaries and benefits) of the Executive Director and other senior management is a sensitive area for boards because it is complex and personal. The compensation must be sufficient to attract and retain good people in an increasingly competitive job market. However, funding agencies, members and other stakeholders may protest if they consider the compensation as being too high. Generally, the board will set the compensation of the Executive Director and approve guidelines for the Executive Director to use in compensating senior staff.
