This paper deals with the purification and the partial char-acterization of glutathione S-transferase (GST) isoforms from the clam Ruditapes decussatus. For the first step of purification, two affinity columns, reduced glutathione (GSH)–agarose and S-hexyl GSH–agarose, were mounted in series. Four affinity fractionswere thus recovered. Further purification was performed using anion exchange chroma-tography. Seven fractions, whichpresent aGSTactivitywith 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) as substrate, were collected and analyzed by RP-HPLC....

We measured cocrystals of the membrane protein Photosystem I with its soluble electron acceptor ferredoxin for the first time at the ALS (Berkeley, CA). Previous data collected at our home source and at other synchrotron sources showed crystals with very high mosaicity (2–5%) and a diffraction limit to 7–8 Aresolution. This first beamtime at ALS was very successful and may represent a breakthrough for the determination of the crystal structure. 110 crystals, grown under modified crystallization conditions, were scanned and for the first time, crystals diffraction to 3.5 A were observed....

Genetic and proteomic approaches have led to the identification of 32 pro-teins, collectively called peroxins, which are required for the biogenesis of peroxisomes. Some are responsible for the division and inheritance of per-oxisomes; however, most peroxins have been implicated in the topogenesis of peroxisomal proteins. Peroxisomal membrane and matrix proteins are synthesized on free ribosomes in the cytosol and are imported post-trans-lationally into pre-existing organelles (Lazarow PB & Fujiki Y (1985) Annu Rev Cell Biol1, 489–530 [1])....

Fifty-nine amino acid sequences belonging to family 57 (GH-57) of the glycoside hydrolases were collected using the CAZy server, Pfamdatabase andBLASTtools. Owing to the sequence heterogeneity of the GH-57 members, sequence alignments were performed using mainly manual methods. Likewise, five conserved regions were identified, which are postulated to be GH-57 consensus motifs.

Loss of functional emerin, a nuclear membrane protein, causes X-linked recessive Emery–Dreifuss muscular dystro-phy. In a yeast two-hybrid screen, we found that emerin interacts with Btf, a death-promoting transcriptional repressor, which is expressedat high levels in skeletalmuscle. Biochemical analysis showed that emerin binds Btf with an equilibriumaffinity (KD)of100 nM. Using a collection of 21 clustered alanine-substitution mutations in emerin, the resi-dues required for binding to Btf mapped to two regions of emerin that flank its lamin-binding domain. ...

Rapid evolution driven by positive Darwinian selection appears in toxins of vipers, scorpions, and marine snails. Although the vast phylogenetic distan-ces between these animals suggest that this phenomenon is common, the recent release of the genome ofNematostella vectensis(Starlet anemone) as a collection of contigs portrays another extreme.

1The epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or ‘mad cow disease’, and the subsequent emer-gence of a new variant of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans, has directed great political and sci-entific attention to a family of related neurodegenera-tive protein-misfolding diseases, collectively known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases.

Báo cáo khoa học: Gene expression waves Cell cycle independent collective dynamics in cultured cells
The ergodic hypothesis, which assumes the independence of each cell of the ensemble from all the others, is a necessary prerequisite to attach single cell based explanations to the grand averages taken from population data. This was the prevailing view about the interpretation of cellular biology experi-ments that typically are performed on colonies of billions of cells.

The finding of a genome-wide oscillation in transcription that gates cells into S phase and coordinates mitochondrial and metabolic functions has altered our understanding of how the cell cycle is timed and how stable cellular phenotypes are maintained.

Self-sustained oscillations are perhaps the most studied objects in science. The accomplishment of such a task reliably and accurately requires the presence of specific control mechanisms to face the presence of variable and largely unpredictable environmental stimuli and noise.

Biological functions governed by the circadian clock are the evident result of the entrainment operated by the earth’s day and night cycle on living organisms. However, the circadian clock is not unique, and cells and organisms possess many other cyclic activities.

Groups of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) were exposed to 25C for 24 days (controls to 13 C) to explore the biochemical and molecular pathways affected by prolonged thermal stress. This temperature is 4C above the summer seawater temperature encountered in western Brittany, France where the animals were collected.

Modern tools in proteomics require access to large arrays of specific bind-ers for use in multiplex array formats, such as microarrays, to decipher complex biological processes. Combinatorial protein libraries offer a solu-tion to the generation of collections of specific binders, but unit operations in the process to isolate binders from such libraries must be automatable to ensure an efficient procedure.

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ made up of adipocytes, various stro-mal cells, resident and infiltrating immune cells, and an extensive endo-thelial network. Adipose secretory products, collectively referred to as adipokines, have been identified as contributors to the negative conse-quences of adipose tissue expansion that include cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

Anthrax lethal toxin triggers death in some cell types, such as macrophages, and causes a variety of cellular dysfunctions in others. Collectively, these effects dampen the innate and adaptive immune systems to allowBacillus anthracis to survive and proliferate in the mammalian host.

We prove that if A is a subset of at least cn1/2 elements of {1, . . . , n}, where c is a sufficiently large constant, then the collection of subset sums of A contains an arithmetic progression of length n. As an application, we confirm a long standing conjecture of Erd˝s and Folkman on complete sequences. o

This paper presents the results of handwritten digit recognition on well-known image databases using state-of-the-art feature extraction and classification techniques. The tested databases are obtained from MNIST [1] and collected samples of digits handwritten by teachers at Da Nang University of Technology. For feature extraction, two features are chosen: Hu’s seven moments and image averaging (resizing the images to ones of less number of pixels for easier comparison).

A well-known open question is whether every countable collection of Lipschitz functions on a Banach space X with separable dual has a common point of Fr´chet differentiability. We show that the answer is positive for e some infinite-dimensional X. Previously, even for collections consisting of two functions this has been known for finite-dimensional X only (although for one function the answer is known to be affirmative in full generality).

The article focuses on the folowing issues: analyzing the typical syntax contexts of verbs of speech with the meaning of direct information, indicating the internal and external objects and the ways to show them in Russian and Vietnamese. The results collected through analysis are contributed in confirming the accuracy of the hypotheses about the objective existence of the internal and external objects of this verbal group in our communication and

Onconase (ONC) is an amphibian member of the pancreatic ribonuclease superfamily that is selectively toxic to tumor cells. It is a much less efficient enzyme than the archetypal ribonuclease A and, in an attempt to gain fur-ther insight, we report the first atomic resolution crystal structure of ONC, determined in complex with sulfate ions at 100 K.
