Contemporary jewellery

This practice-led research project investigates the industry methods around Australian South Sea pearls and the Pinctada maxima (pearl shell) in the context of a studio-based contemporary jewellery practice. This project will look closely at how Australia’s northwest pearling industries operate and at the pearling history of Broome.

This research project explores the negative environmental impacts of anthropogenic debris by investigating these found materials within the medium of contemporary jewellery objects. Contemporary jewellery objects are a powerful artistic medium. We can wear jewellery on our bodies and carry it with us. Jewellery can sit on or through the body, and at the same time extend beyond our bodies. Jewellery objects can resonate their own space, to be watched, observed publicly or privately, inviting the wearer or voyeur to think, to enquire, to remember and to investigate.

The main contents of "Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy: Southern Shan Shui: Interpreting reimagined Australian landscapes through contemporary jewellery" include all of the following: Chapter One: Chinese landscape depictions, ink and brush landscape painting, scholar’s rock and Chinese mythological landscapes; Chapter Two: Australian landscape and its depiction in pictorial motif and jewellery & object; Chapter Three: Methodology, studio production, and reflection onfinalised series of works; Experiments and reflection of installation and presentation of finalised works.
