Declining returns to investment

In the present age of mass access to tertiary education, the pattern of declining returns to investment in tertiary education was observed in a growing number of countries that include Vietnam. This trend may avert individual investment in human capital formation, and thereby negatively affecting national economic growth and development. To contribute to addressing this problem, the current paper aims to analyse the factors that drive the decay in returns to investment in tertiary education in Vietnam.

Climatic change and epidemic disease could influence the investor sentiment. Under such circumstances, how to invest the stock market in different stock market states (bull, bear or neutral) is an important topic for investors. To capture the investor sentiment more precisely, we use principal component analysis to analyze some investor sentiment indicators, and then form a composite index of investor sentiment.

Lending is an investment and investments are all about the comparison of alternatives and the assessment of risks -vs- return. Up until recently, the government was issuing treasury notes with yields in excess of 40%. Consequently, banks found treasuries more attractive than long-term loans yielding 16-20%. Treasury bills have since declined from the high levels, but still offer an attractive return on investment when comparing liquidity, the high transactional costs of long-term lending, and the short-term nature of the investment.

Another concern over raising taxes on high-income households is that it might influence decisions to start businesses. If increased taxes reduce returns to investing in small business ventures, high-income individuals might be less likely to take risks, and entrepreneurial activity might decline. Some studies conclude that higher taxes reduce entrepreneurship, but a greater number conclude the opposite.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia represents a unique situation, where invest- ments in very large farms contrast with an overall contraction of agricultural land use. In the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, the area sown to grains has declined by 30 million ha since the end of the Soviet era. These croplands were mostly returned to pastures or fallow, due to lack of suitable technology and market access. Large farms were better able to deal with financing, infrastructure, and technology constraints of the transition, lead- ing to considerable concentration.

The emergence of the derivatives market has led to the creation of investment securities with complex cash flow profiles. Investment professionals, using derivatives, can customize a security’s structure to the investor’s risk/reward profile of choice. As a result, investors now have more investment choices. Several filers cited subjects for providing misleading information about real estate securities or securitized commercial mortgages. One filer cited a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for failing to disclose investment risks in certain CDOs, CMOs and trust preferred securities. The CEO had managed the investment portfolio, supposedly with a “very high” rate of return, and received large bonus payments. Later, the filer determined the CEO had misled bank management about the risks.

While the demand for research on investment performance has increased, the cost of producing this research has declined. Early studies relied on proprietary or expensive commercial databases for their fund performance figures, or researchers collected data by hand from published paper volumes. In 1997, the Center for Research in Security Prices introduced the CRSP mutual fund database, com- piled originally by Mark Carhart, into the academic research market. Starting in about 1994, several databases on hedge fund returns and characteristics became available to academic researchers.
